Looking for some info as our current health insurance will run out in March. I know there are lots of self employed or small business owners on LB. We have been with BC/BS of NY through Farm Bureau for many years. They just upped our deductable from $2500 to $4000 and jumped the premiums to 900+ per month.

I know some companies only cover certain states and such, looking for a few clue where to check into.

Thanks

Mark

What away to start the New Year!

My husband and I are both self-employed and we have to purchase our own health insurance. My best recommendation is to call an insurance broker. They can email or mail you comparison charts of different plans offered in your area. Ours sends them to us in a chart side-by-side so we can compare all they offer and determine which plan is best for us. This also includes the deductibles and premiums based on our ages. Of course, I cover the kids on my plan and my husband has his own separate insurance because he is so much older than me

and it is cheaper if he is on his own plan.

Let the broker do the work for you. Good luck!

Someone posted on another site that with a pre-existing condition and a $1000 deductible, she got BC/BS for under $200 a month. Seems that there is a place on their site where you can add in what you want/need and it will figure out the price. If you add a broker/agent, the cost will go up. Call around, search the web and best of luck!

I'd check with several insurance brokers to see who's got the best deal. One thing I think is important when looking into health insurance is to have a good, high lifetime maximum on your coverage. A lot of policies have a maxium of $1M, and that is actually not a lot if something major happens. I own a business and we have American Medical Security and have had for 9 or so years. Very pleased with them.

What ever you do stay away from IAB insurance! When you have one in mind I would call your states department of insurance and check out the insurance company. I say this with experience in getting ripped off! I can not get anyone to cover me because I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, which I do not have. But since the diagnosis no one would take me on. I found IAB. They told me they would cover my meds (which cost me $1350 a month at the time) and my copays on meds would be $10 and $20 per perscription. They never once covered any of my pills. They also said that I would have $20 co pays for doctors visits. They never covered them either. I called the Ohio Department of Insurance and they were not even liscenced in my state. I still have yet to see one penny of my money back. Big buyer beware with insurance companies!

Good luck

Fran

Edited to add: Illinois ended up sueing them and then they changed their website to have a disclaimer. Be very careful!

Mark;

This may be the company I just PM'd you about. I wish I could remember the name, all I know is it was initials more than a name.

Brokers are actually paid by the insurance companies themselves for bringing you on board. Using a broker is not a cost out of your pocket. I have priced insurance through several companies with and without the broker and there is no difference in premium or coverage. They are very knowledgeable and can steer you in the right direction based on your individual insurance needs. Good luck!

We are self employed business owners and have a policy thru

a company named. NASE - National Association of Self Employed.

It is for medical insurance, eye glasses. They also have possibly other components like dental, etc.

They can be contacted by phone:

1-800-232-6273

(7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. CST) Or www.nase.org

We have additional policies from accident to health from another

company called: Combined Insurance. They are kind of an AFLAC

type company but their policy prices are less as they do not advertise.

You can contact them for information at: 1 800 225-4500 or

www.combined.com

Hope that gives you some additional options to choose from.

Thanks for the input and info. We will be checking several places and have a agent friend we will talk with for his ideas.
