l went to town yesterday and filled up my truck to a tune of 106 bucks. Then l got my fave rye bread for 4.77 a loaf and a big box of rice which is getting harder to come by lately for some reason for 7.99 and bought a carton of smokes for 80.00 something. Short trip didn't get a lot but managed to spend a few hundred anyway. But l read this is only the start of whats to come once fall arrives..along with massive layoffs.

Margo, I'd never flame you for your common sense!

Just this morning I heard that it will be up to $10.00 in the next 2-3 years, UGH

You know, i have not really complained thus far about gas prices ...i do not like it, but i can live with the $3-$4 range ....HOWEVER i cannot live with it being in the 5-10 dollar range. Something has to be done NOW! You can start drilling in my back yard for all i care ...!

I just got a 08 F150, however, it is just sitting out in the drive not moving. I have a Pontiac Grand Am' that i can fill up with $20 at the moment that i AM using and do not plan to sell anytime soon

. I've started cutting back how much i drive, combine stops when i got out ext.

I watched the news last night and heard about the gas predictions and it actually scares me.

We really need someone (hello President Bush!) to get a handle on this economy and start turning things around.

I keep saying I should just sell everything, pay cash for about 20 acres, build a shack on it. Get some cows and grow some veggies and just forget everything else. When it comes right down to it all any of us need are the basics, a roof and food.

I doubt it will go over $5.00 / gallon in the next year. Anything above would just kill the economy.

I have to drive ~400+ miles each week to job sites, and switched from an Aerostar (18-20 MPG) to a Toyota Corolla (37+ MPG) a year ago. That is helping quite a bit, but I can't bring ladders and large tools to work with it.

Luckily, with my work I can telecommute more and more. I test direct digital control systems in buildings, and now most of these systems have an internet browser interface.

I feel sorry for folks who legitimately have to drive the big rigs for work, but I wonder what it is going to take to get the hillbillys around here that drive their unloaded monster 4x4s with Truck Nutz to switch. When they blast by me in the little Corolla, I get a little perverse satisfaction that they are paying through their nose at the pump.

On the other hand, when I commute I see the tree huggers with their "Ride a bicycle to work" or "One less auto!" banners put up on their fences who seem to think that everyone lives just like them and can bike, walk or use public transportation to get around.

I came back to this thread to try to make my thoughts more clear....Believe me, I FULLY sympathize with those who are 'stuck' with a long commute to work, and NO viable choices other than to drive there and back by themselves. I am retired, so can(and DO!) stay home, now more than EVER-and I realize how fortunate I am that I do NOT 'have to' drive somewhere on every weekday! I believe it is SO VERY unfair that people who were not 'haves', but who WERE 'getting by' are now in danger of losing what they have, because of events totally beyond their control... we can 'rail' against the oil companies and others all we want(and likely with VERY good reason...
default_sad.png
), BUT, we can't 'wave a wand' and change this kind of thing, so have to do what EACH OF US can, as citizens, to improve our own situation, and that of the society we live in.

I am also one of those who lives in the country BY CHOICE,for virtually all of my life---and I will do my BEST to continue to for all of the rest of my life; I would just 'dry up and blow away' if I had to live in a city, and without my beloved horses and dogs-but it is unquestionably getting more and more difficult to deal with the realities of rural living.

My point really was that I STRONGLY believe that EVERYONE will need to contribute to a change in how we live our lives, PERMANENTLY, if we are to deal with the now and future changes in the 'way of the world'....many are already HAVING to change their habits; but even those who 'have' will need to for there to be any lasting benefits....IF, with any improvement, all the 'old habits' are reinstated---we will only have WORSE and more lasting problems, I believe. We are ALL going to need to 'suck it up', find the ways that each and every one of us can lessen our expenses in ways that may 'put a dent in', but won't 'RUIN' the lifestyles we have become used to, and learn to make those changes in thinking AND acting PERMANENT--No, it isn't and won't be, 'FUN', but humans are very adaptable, and it CAN BE DONE, IF there is the genuine WILL to do it!! As I said before,as a longtime close observer of human nature and behavior, I don't see that as being easy in today's society--but, IF people will make the effort, it CAN be done. The real question is whether it WILL be.....

Soap box time!!!

Blame the oil companies all you want. I know at least one that was selling at a loss for almost a month in some places.

The problem is much bigger than Oil Companies. It’s a global economy issue. The world is vastly overpopulated and now technology is making it possible for those who used to go without to obtain a higher “standard” of living. Of course, China is an excellent example. I was watching a “feed the starving kids in Africa” thing on TV the other day and there were a couple of girls that were from a teenage mother being showcased. The thought occurred to me, instead of some bleeding heart moron just feeding their mother, why didn’t they have her sterilized? Then, we wouldn’t be watching another generation of starving children. But, people never think of the long term good…only “everyone should be able to have children”. SO, they’ll give these girls food so that they can grow up and make more starving children. BAH! China has had population controls for years and is still having trouble.

There is no control whatsoever in the US. Every year, our borders bring more people in by the millions and so do our low intelligence breeders who don’t give two seconds of thought to questioning if they SHOULD have children. Not surprising, if we’ll breed horses that don’t improve the breed at every chance, why would we question whether or not our own genetics are worth passing on? The biblical concept of practicing moderation in all things is practically non-existent. The US is a country of excess and the rest of the world is rapidly catching up. Those who study History of Failed Civilizations and Economics can tell you that there is a breaking point in the global economy. After all, there is only so much to go around.

OPEC wants to know what that breaking point is for the US and it is OPEC that controls the price of oil. Our politicians, indeed, are too weak minded to handle the situation, and the general public’s belief that the government should always come to the rescue (no matter what stupid situation we put ourselves into) is only making things worse.

I HATE hippies. But, honestly, some of their rhetoric is true. We ALL need to try to help and be willing to pay more for alternative energy. No, not corn based ethanol, I mean solar and wind. The days of cheap gas are fading. Will gas hit $5 this year? Maybe. I think Diesel will. As for $10 per gallon? Well…that’s up to the American public to help OPEC achieve their dream on that one.

OK, I’ll get down from the soap box now.

About the rice.... I saw something on the news.. said the rice prices are going through the roof. Costco was having to limit the number of bags of rice being sold.per customer. There was one woman who had bought a years supply(she owns a restaurant).

They said on the news tonight that Shell reported a 25% increase in profits and BP was something like 63%. Don't tell me the oil companies are partly to blame! The individual gas stations? No, I don't think it is them. It is the guys at the top. I get tired of people blaming the president to. Sure, he can help, but as he said this morning, he has tried different things and congress has turned it down. Also, we have to look much further back to see the root of these problems. For example, when our country decided that we didn't need gold to back up our money any more.

As far as rice, it is all hype IMO. They had a California rice grower on the news and he said there is no shortage. They have plenty of rice.

My comment was meant to be a joke, sort of. Dec. 21, 2012 has been predicted to be the end of the world as we know it since ancient times... from asteroids, planet X, polar shift, the Antichrist, etc.

What's supposed to happen in 2012?
2012 is sometimes claimed to be "a great year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse)"

Also the year some calender doesn't go beyond... 12-2012 I believe?

It's the Mayan calendar that doesn't go beyond 12-21-12. The Mayans grasp of time and their calendar was extremely accurate, more so than our own. Aristotle, the I Ching and even the Bible contain also mention similar predictions.

I'm going to interject something here not related to the topic...China's population controls included killing babies as they crowned during birth, since they were not officially "born" yet and so it was not seen as murder. Widespread infantcide and VERY late term abortion (far past viability at birth) is also rampant.

There is a worldwide rice shortage being predicted, leading stores here to ration or restrict the amount purchased per individual.

Eat Quinoa, it's MUCH better for you and still pretty cheap.

Well, gee, doesn't that give you a warm fuzzy feeling. Don't worry about the gas prices or the horse market, because the world is going to end in 4 years!!!

While I think things need to change, I hope the predictions for 2012 are wrong.

Margo you are so right on! I have been saying the same things for a couple of years now.

Some of the third world countries plus China have come into the "modern age" and want ALL of the modern conveniences we have enjoyed, some of us all of our lives. We can't stop them. They want to drive wherever they want, whenever they want. They want to burn electricty for as many hours as they want just like us. Which like Margo said is going to effect us from now on so we need to get used to it and change some of our ways. There are more countries yet to follow. Do I like it that the oil companies are making mega bucks from this? NO but this is America and we are a capitalistic country. I'm not ready nor willing to become socialistic or communistic. We need to develop wind energy, solar, and yes NUCLEAR. If France can use nuclear energy there is NO reason we can't! We have a nuclear plant here in Iowa and it is safe just not big enough to supply the whole state.

And on the subject of 2012 if the that were true what happened when it was 12-21-(1912)(1812 etc)12
