Woke up this am to find what I think is a great-horned owl stuck in a fence. The fence is 2X4 squares and he's got his head through a square. I've been making phone calls all morning trying to find help. My husband has the bolt cutters at the new place and I'm trying to think of a safe way for both of us to get him out of there.

You really do need a professional because those big owls can cause damage with their talons and beaks.

Call either animal control or the humane society to find out who your closest wildlife professional is. They usually have a name for someone that they can call on too.

Please post again with your results.....

If you don't have a wildlife person in your area, you are going to need a towel. A good sized one that can cover both his head and can wrap around his body. Wear gloves and thick long sleeves! Plan for his struggling and trying to strike out.

Good luck.

Got a hold of a lady who has done rehab but hasn't dealt with this, she's coming out and we are going to try to get him out when she gets here. Sure hope we can do it. before he hurts himself too bad. I got a good close up look at those talons and I am going to be very cautious of them!

He's one unhappy owl and he'll get more upset when we start messing with him.

no humane society anywhere near, called DNR but they haven't returned the call.

I hope that you and the other lady can help the owl! Poor thing. Also you may need to check your laws in your state. You may have to have a permit to keep the owl until he is better. The lady that does rehab may be able to help you with that kind of info. Keeping you and the owl in my thoughts.

He's out!! amd on his way to a raptor rehab in Iowa county. She thinks he's quite young and if he checks out ok they will likely bring him back here to his territory to release him. She said the parents care for them for about 6 months and he would be better here if he's ok.

Seemed "shocky" and stressed and exhausted but didn't have anything obviously broken.

Whew, feeling better.

I'm glad everyhing worked out! Poor guy was probably scared out of his mind. Our friends rescued a raven earlier this year, its not the most noble of birds but we sure did get a warm fuzzy feeling when he could fly away again!

What a great thing you did for a beautiful creature. Glad it turned out so well.

Hopefully they will keep you informed of your wild friend and when he's to be released.
