The Temperature is dropping and we need to build a fire in the wood stove.

Gotta problem..... Bri and I heard a frog croaking in the chimney! (Our day time temps have been warming up enough to wake the little critters up from hybernation!)

Now Bri doesn't want me to build a fire and it's going to get COLD tonight! AAACCKKK.

My only salvation is Christmas..... Bri still believes in Santa.....and Santa EXPECTS people to have fires burning in their fireplaces......

WHY TONIGHT?????

(Merry Christmas everyone!)

Maybe tell Bri once you start the fire the smoke will smoke him out and he'll hop happily away. He'll probably feel the heat and scurry....do you have your flue open?

Well nuts.....I have never had that happen......hmmm ...I would be afraid of hurting the frog with a fire.......but maybe if you mostly made it smokey he would hop up and away......I don't know I love froggies and would never ever knowingly harm one.......yes I would probably freeze my butt off till we rescued the silly frog but that is just me....do you clean your own chiminey? could you try carefully dropping a rope down and maybe get the guy to ride out?......we have had bird before and using the cleaning ropes and chain was enough to get them to vacate.....santa has alternates as we have NO chimney here....he uses the doors

Oh my, this is definitely a Powell Butte problem isn't it? My mom had a frog come up her bathtub drain when she started the bath water but hadn't pushed the drain stopper down yet!

What in the world do you do then...when she turned the water off the little guy hoped back down the drain?! And everyone has septic tanks here.

We have had birds living in our chimney off and on all summer. We got to where we all worked as a team when one would land in the fireplace (we have an insert with a closed door)...my son would run and get the towel, my oldest daughter would shut the cat and dogs in my bedroom and my youngest daughter would open the back door wide (of course my husband is always out of town for these wonderful moments). I would then open the door to the fireplace, the bird would fly out to the window and sit in the windowsill, I would pick it up in a towel and let it out the back door. Worked like a charm everytime. We would have one in there a couple times a week. If you didn't hear it at first you always knew because the cat was sitting on the hearth intently watching the fireplace.

The worst was when we were on a two week vacation this summer (don't flame me...I know no one has time for a vacation with horses but we had a live in horse person here to care for the critters

) and we came home to 16 dead birds in our fireplace. Ok, so she took good care of the horses but doesn't have a fondness for birds.

I too was very nervous to start a fire but did after not hearing a bird in there for a couple days. Now that we keep a fire going 24/7 they no longer fly in.

Maybe you can light some paper in there w/o the wood so it will die down quickly and see if he decides to get out while the gettin's good.

I know this is stupid.....especially since we've had a fire going full time until this afternoon!

I finally convinced Bri that a fire was needed......especially when the croaking stopped.

Larry figures it was in a wall and not in the chimney.....

Debra, your made me laugh! You are so right! Powell Butte is indeed unique. We've had a dozen birds fly into our windows, a starling fly into our livingroom (and we fortunately showed him out again!), a BUNCH of frogs in our bathroom(s)!, and an owl roosting in the Willow Tree in the back yard every day until sundown......I took photos and we even named him!

And now........it is time to convince a child to GO TO BED!

Now that you mention it...we have frogs croaking in our bedroom and bathroom!

I think they are actually in the heater vents. I have taken the vents out and listened and it sure sounds like they are coming from in there. I start croaking back at them to get them to be quiet so I can get some sleep! I know...I must be drinking too much eggnog.

Uh...I'm assuming by now your problem has been solved? Is Bri still asking about the frog, or did all the Christmas gifts take her mind of the frog?

We had a duck fall down our chimney one year. We had to pull the insert out and then get the duck out because she could not fly back up the chimney. Talk about fun that time. When she did the second time we put wire on the opening in the chimeny stack. That stopped her from coming down the chimney.

Problem was solved between SANTA coming.....and Dad pointing out that we'd had a fire burning constantly up until only a few hours earlier...... We have since heard frogs in the outside wall of the livingroom plus the bathroom wall! You'd think it was Spring!

This is such an old farmhouse, who knows how many nooks and spaces we have!
