I noticed today that my filly has a dorsal stripe, and shoulder shading, which matches her mothers exactly. What would cause that to happen in a Bay horse>? Could there be a dun factor in there somehere>?

Here's some pic's. Mind you she is super Red for a new born, so much so that my vet was nervous about toxicity as being born so red can be an indicator for toxicity, however thankfully, she's healthy. Her mom is what I would call a blood bay, and her dad is the same vibrant color, but what's up with the dorsal line and shoulder shading?? Here's some pictures....the flash wiped out her dark red color, but at least you can see what I am talking about, I love how it get's all squiggly...

It looks like countershading, which is common in bays. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but thats what the line probably is, if she has no other dun factors.

Your pretty girl is a Bay- Dun is a simple dominant, and to get a Dun a parent would have to be Dun.

The countershading will fade, it may always be there seasonally, but not, as a true Dorsal, all the time.
