Just curious, is it all of them, sounds like it. If only one were doing it, I would suspect and ulcer possibly, but with all of them doing it sounds like something just in that area that they like. Hopefully someone else will have ideas, just no one had posted yet, and wanted you to know you hadn't been ignored.

sandy thanks

Just going for the water, and maybe little mineral off it.

Never know with theses guys but they do like to copy, thinking someone is getting something better.

I would say get them a salt or a protein block.

If they are lacking something then they will get it from the block.

Just like I am saying on a lot of things, BE ON THE SAFE SIDE. A salt block will not hurt them so why not get one for them.

Where does the drain pipe come from?

Horses like salty things, they also like sweet things. I'd be concerned for the runoff, though, and figuring out its origin.

If it is safe, as in not from waste of any kind, then fine, get them the mineral block and don't worry over it, or fence it away from them and get them a mineral block anyway.

(read your feed packaging, though, some complete feeds just need a salt block only, no minerals necessary in the salt).

thanks everyone, the water is running off a new plastic roof we had fitted, off that roof onto a gutter and the water drips off the gutter and onto the ground very slightly, but when i let them out first thing they all head for this wee corner and paw at it and lick it and its discusting lol :bgrin they lift up there heads and there faces and tongues are black, from the soil, its not that wet,and my boy is taking chunks somtimes, they all have there own salt lick and separate mineral block, thats why im bafffled

: i hope this helps?

Just a thought, but if they are getting the dirt into their mouths on a regular basis, I would test for your sand content and if you have sand in the soil you might want to ask the vet about sand clear or some other form of getting the sand out of their bellies before they colic. Good luck finding out what it is. Maybe you could get brave and give a little taste to see what it is??
