Hey Matt....your post made me think that we were "off our tree" ...................all this work for a small return.

Then I started thinking about two beautiful trips we had (both to Mauii) and they cost the same as my outlay for the things that make me smile everyday. Those trips only lasted 10 days

I guess if you are a mini horse lover that is in it for the money.......WRONG....someone said "if you want to make a small fortune in the Miniature horse business.....start with a Large Fortune"

We love our horses and the joy they bring to us, and the general public. You are never lonely when you have miniature horses.

wow that scared my mom a bit LOL! That amount for 3 minis and a pony!? Tell me again why I have them

Just kidding I wouldn't have it any other away

That's a great tool, but we keep very tight records for the farm so already knew the bad news.

However, like CZP1 said.....

it is way cheaper to have a horse than paying a shrink!

I always tell folks that Im a poor person playing the rich persons game!

Well Im so happy to say I save A LOT of $$$ trimming my own horses feet, and floating their teeth each yr and buy their vacs at TSC. Wow dose it save!!!

Straw $1 per bale helps too for bedding

and $3 per bale of good hay helps as well.

I'll also be saving this yr by not going to any shows... but did buy a new trailer...

I think mine is broken... It keeps adding more and more :p I agree, buying the horse is cheap! It's the care and vet bills. It was a hard lesson to learn after years of show jumping that a daddy money tree I always thought was in the back yard doesn't exist!!! Pfft!

Well, I just did my "expense" ledger for our 2010 farm taxes. Not including hay and farrier (cash exchanges), we were at $2300 for the four of them. I'd guess another $1200-1500 for the missing hay and farrier costs.

All those little trips to the feed store led to lots of impulse buying! I think I finally came to that conclusion in Aug/Sept because the receipts were fewer and were mostly just for feed

Good link Matt.

Sadly, I just did my taxes this weekend, so I do know. Last year was a good year with no additional vet issues (crossing fingers for another year like that!), but one year it was $19K in just extra vet bills. Our usually average is $2-5k in vet bills, not including geldings - we do 2-4 a year.)

We spent in 2010 - $8,800 on just hay (we're on acreage and have pasture), $6,500 on farrier and $2,250 on registration with AMHA/AMHR - we were playing catch up from 2009 so late fees in that amount. That doesn't include all the other 'stuff'. Those were the big three last year that are stuck in my mind. : )

Why when I get buyers saying they want a cheap Mini. The purchase price is nothing with the ongoing routine expenses.

We have five and spend less than $3000. Not bad at all. We don't show and I didn't have to count fencing because that's already up and there's no maintenance.

The cost was more when I was breeding/foaling.

And I sold one quilt last year that more than covered the price of hay.

Besides, happiness from having horses: priceless.

It wasn't that bad, our biggest expense is the farrier... but he does a great job so we love him

our hay we get quite reasonably and we have none of the other expenses since we don't show.

I already know also since I just did taxes. For Feed, Hay, Supplements, Vet, and Farrier I spent just over $8,000.00 and that does not begin to cover the shows and other items of horse care. Wish I could learn to do my horses feet but I don't have the strength in my wrists to use a knife-I'd slit my arm trying to use one. Thank heavens I have not had any large vet bills in years and right now I'm not breeding anything and have not in the last couple of year--although I do have at least 2 foals due soon--I bought the mare's in foal.
