All 6 Of my Minis have LONG thick tails, they all drag between 4 and 8 inches on the ground.

I thought of cutting them for a FLEETING moment but watched and noticed as soon as one backed onto its tail it immediately stepped forward no damage done.

I LOVE long tails, and they are thick and healthy so I leave them, It takes about 5 years to regrow hair thats been lost,

I think the fact I actually brush them MAYBE once per year is a large part of it, I finger comb there tails, No matter how gently ya brush ya WILL pull out hair.

Finger brushing take s while but is well worth it, I never braid or bag them either, braiding also can cause damage, and I have a secret product i swear by, Equus super detangler, AWESOME stuff

Does anyone ever noticed.....once thier young horses tail touched the ground if they stoped growing? I've heard that once a yearling or young horse's tail touched the ground that they were done growing..... and I've kept notice on mine..... and have noticed that a few of my young one's.......once thier tail touched the ground...... they haven't grown any more...?

My colt's tail touched the ground as a yearling, and in the last 6 months since then he has grown about an inch taller. My mare is 8 and her tail never did reach the ground, but I'm pretty sure she stopped growing a long time ago.

Gracie, your horses are a lot smarter than my gelding. He steps on his tail, pulls out hair, then acts like someone else pulled his tail and gets mad. :DOH! I love him like crazy but... he isn't terribly bright. lol.

No No No - you guys have it all wrong. The long tails are there so you have something to stake them with on windy days! Duh!!

My gelding has a nice, thick, long tail. I don't keep it up in the summer, as I'd like him to have it for fly protection, but I do keep it braided and up during the winter, seems the snow and ice balls cause a lot of breakage. I also do trim the ends...just to keep the dry stuff off, and swear by Shapely's MTG...I've used it on all of my horses with very good results. It smells horrible, but works well.

My little fella, 18 months old, had to have almost a foot cut off his tail, he was constantly stepping on it, it was so long.

how in the world do you get under yearling age with such a long tail??? even with a great feed program, I have never seen a miniature with that long of tail at that age.
