I was just curious how you guys felt about trading for horses???? I've never traded a live horse for a live horse. I once traded a show cart for a mare. I just see so many ads wanting to trade a horse for a different type of horse. I'm not looking to trade any of mine, but thought I'd see what more seasoned people thought of it.

May be opening up a can of worms.....

Personally, I see nothing wrong with trading. It's the same as you buying a horse from me for $2500 and then me buying one of yours for $2500, only no actual cash money exchanges hands.

I have made 2 trades throughout the years. One was a mare and her yearling filly for a mare and an unrelated 2 year filly. That was within the first couple years of my getting into minis. The other was a mare for a mare, with another forum member, also several years ago. I think it is good, as when both parties agree, they are each happy with their new purchase.

ETA...I forgot, I had also done another trade many years ago...a mature stallion for a young colt.

I think trading has its own risks and benefits as outright buying. I have done one trade, and on the whole I think both sides were very satisfied, but we were also both very diligent.

I think trading is fine as long as both parties are satisfied with the trade.

I have traded a QH for a mini and a pony before and I was very pleased as was the person that got the QH. She wanted something her kids could ride and I wanted something I could enjoy

Sometimes it works out very nicely and sometimes you get burnt. But it is just like buying and selling. You can end up unhappy with a purchase as easy as a trade

Just my 2 cents

Right now, Storm is here on trade for Sable's foal..which is why I am out there every day feeling around to make sure that the foal is in there..otherwise I am paying for Storm ;)

I don't see anything wrong with doing a trade, as long as both parties agree and are happy. The newest horse I got I traded saddles and tack and another one I paid some money and took pics of a bunch of her horses for her to send in to AMHR.

Well I have traded on numerous occasions. That is how my mini herd got so big. I traded a yearling arabian colt for a 7 year old anglo-trakehner mare. I traded a 5 month old arabian filly for a AMHR mare, traded a arabian mare for a older arabian mare and yearling breeding stock paint colt. I then traded the breeding stock paint colt for a arabian mare that I then traded for a AMHR filly. I traded a arabian mare for 2 mini mares and a shetland mare. One mini mare was in foal and had a filly. I then traded the shetland mare and a future 2007 AMHR colt for a arabian mare that I then traded for a AMHR mini mare and her 2007 colt that I gave to the person who I got the arabian mare from. So technically I traded the shetland mare for a AMHR mare. Then I traded a cart and $300 cash for a AMHR mare, traded a 2 year old A/R filly for a A/R stallion and a AMHR mare. I then traded a AMHR mare for a AMHR colt and a AMHR filly. I traded a arabian filly for a AMHR colt. I traded also a AMHR/FBR stallion for a A/R mare. I think that is it. I was happy with all my trades and the people I traded with were also very happy. So it works if all parties agree to the trade.

I have traded in the past, with two different people on four occasions. It is like buying a horse, it can go either way for either party. The first time I traded, I was NOT happy. It was partially my fault for not demanding more pictures, but it was someone that is pretty big and is mentioned on here a lot. I stupidly accepted this person's word on some things. Well, when I got the horse, things were not as they were supposed to be. I was upset, and when I mentioned it to the person I got her from, he told me I was telling a lie!!!!! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH that made me MAD!!! Then I sent proof. I think the deal was this person didn't even check things like I asked him to, he just assumed he gave me the right answers. Either way, I wasn't happy and won't buy from that person again.

I then used that horse ("buyer" was made fully aware of all issues and saw the horse in person first) and some cash to trade for a proven broodmare that fit my needs. Then another time, I traded with this person and was happy. Last year, I went back to that person and made another trade (traded a horse of my breeding) and was again very happy with the horse I got, and I'm ecstatic that the horse I traded of my breeding will be shown by a trainer this year!!!!! She'll do better in that situation to promote my farm than she would have had I shown her.

I've never traded horses, though I've had the opportunity, it just never worked out for me in the past (generally it was high transport costs that decided me against it). I think it could work out very well if both parties know what they want and what they getting.

Right now I wouldn't be in the market for any trading since I'd like to lower my numbers but I won't rule it out in the future.

I've done some trading. I traded a mare for her young filly. The filly was only 2 and they wanted a mare they could breed that year. She was too immature so I swapped. I also traded 4 miniature mares for 2 riding horses. I wanted to get back into riding the other party wanted to get out. It worked out great for both of us and I even got a horse (maybe 2) that hubby wants to ride!

I made my first trade this December and was very happy with the exchange, traded a broodmare in foal for a yearling show filly and I think both parties are very happy with the trade and felt it was a equal trade.

I traded only once, but was VERY happy with my trade. I got Scott Creek Monarch Spotlight in exchange for several mares, a filly and a young stallion that were on my sale page. Spotlight was an expensive horse and by trading I was able to get him right away

, rather than waiting for me to sell all of those horses. I brought the horses down to LA and dropped them off and picked up my stallion. I love that stallion and love what he produces!!

I have traded show rabbits bit there are no training issues you would have with horses. The trade is for bloodlines with rabbits. With a horse there is much more invested. If you know the other horse you are trading for You are not buying a "Pig in a Poke". This trade horse if you don't know it could end up being like so many of those auction horses. Totally calm and sweet the night you get it and the Devil Himself the next morning. I would not trade unless I knew the horse and I most likely would not trade then as I have too much hart invested in my horses.

I've traded several times, been happy most of the time. Just traded with Hairicane for two young colts, one a Sids Rebel grandson and the other a Black Velvet grandson. Both will hopefully bring a new dimension to our breeding program.

I've also traded a mare for a gelding who didn't turn out to be what I really wanted, and a mini for a TWH. I ended up selling the TWH (she was WAY too big for me) and used to money to buy a stallion I had my eye on, so that worked out pretty well, too!

If you do your homework, it can be a pretty good deal.

We have done trades. It worked out well for both parties. As long as everyone is happy, go for it.
