The foaling was incredible. I had been checking Bow periodically all night and this morning I let her out of her stall to the horse lot. It was warm out and the material on the ground (hay) was pretty good for foaling, IMO.
My friend and I decided to go outside around 10:10 a.m. I’m glad we did. Bow was laying down in a corner of the horse lot. She seemed to be pushing and I checked the inside of her vulva. It wasn’t the bright red that it had been before, but was now a purplish array of what looked to be clots. (It resembled a whole bunch of spider veins to be honest) I sat down beside her and right when I got comfortable a yellowish liquid was slowly dripping from Bow’s vulva. I stood up and suddenly her water broke.
I kneeled down near Bow’s hind end, while I was on the phone calling my mom who was in the house. Legs immediately appeared. Then, a nose. It was obvious that we had a palomino on our hands! LOL! I broke the white stuff (placenta?) from the legs and the nose and kept pulling it back as the baby came out. I basically just caught the baby. There was no need to help Bow. The baby was literally in my arms.
I was amazed at how fast Bow foaled. I could swear that it was under two minutes from the time the water broke to the time the baby was out. Bow was instantly nickering to the baby and baby was answering back. In under five minutes the baby was up and ready to nurse!
We moved Momma and Baby to the barn for privacy. Baby nursed and was ready to jump around.
So, we are proud to announce the arrival of our LAST foal, JCP’s Grand Finale. Her name is Ale, short for Finale. Its amazing how our first foal was a filly and our last was a filly! Also, she is not a dwarf. My mom is pretty territorial about her! LOL! She wanted a palomino filly SO bad!
Its also pretty funny that we now have TWO babies born on April 30th! Last year Bow foaled a colt on this day, and of course Lil' Ale was born today!
Trying to nurse!
Skinny Momma!
