Just thought I would post these photos. They are out of a very old book. We have scratched our heads (and argued) about them for hours on end

Now you can too!!!

Those are surely not the same ponies, the ones in pairs are bay are they not??? The scruffy ones are not bay, maybe chestnut.??????

Back to the shafts, the vehicle is a Bellcrown, made in the UK. Most of thier vehicles do have the swan neck shafts for the smaller carts. It was very common in the old days for low bodied vehicles to have a bend in the shafts so as to keep the body low but the shafts would fit a good sized horse without upsetting the balance.

I see a light colored forelock swept to the side, falling over each pony's left eyebrow.

It would not surprise me if these were the same ponies....I've no doubt that they are.

I see a light forelock too, and as it is a black and white photo, it's pretty hard to tell the colour...but I hazard a guess at silver-black.

Heck, I've seen as big a change in many of the before and after shots here on the forum, of our minis.

That light colored "forelock" tucked to the left side is the blinker is it not? That's all I see there. The forelocks are, I think, pulled off to the right side where we can't see them.

I don't know. If the scruffy photo is of young horses, maybe yearlings? then they could grow up into that pair. To me the scruffy ones don't look quite the sort to turn into that pair--and yes, I've seen a few horses go from rags to riches & change drastically in appearance, so I do know how much difference good feed/care/grooming can make. What seems the most unlikely to me is the color. I wish it said the age of the horses in the scruffy picture.

If they are the same ponies they must be quite big coz look at the size of the carraige compared to the lady in it...if she got out look how far down she would have to go and then the ponies/carraige would be quite tall dont you think?? They look at least 12hh to me?????

I have a question......it keeps coming up that american shetlands wear heavy shoes for showing (do I understand that right?) Is this to make them lift their legs higher or some other reason???? Wish someone could post a video of one in motion....Apart from the straight heads I think they are stunning and as I have said already, would love one for my mini breeding programme....I love floating high legged action and refinement and sounds like they may have both.

There are 4 divisions of Shetlands being shown today. The Foundation, Classic, Modern Pleasure and Modern. Only the Moderns are allowed to wear heavier shoes. Modern Pleasure and Classic are only allowed an evenly weighted plate or keg shoe (approx. 6 ounces). Many moderns will carry an 8+ ounce shoe and possibly a leather pad between the hoof and shoe. There is a video of a Modern Pleasure stallion on my sales page. Remember, the Modern Pleasure division is not as extreme in their motion as aModern, this particular pony's motion is very typical of the division.

Granted they werent ultra refined however I dont think the shetlands we had as kids are gone I think we are just now calling them miniature horses (running and ducking now)
I completely agree and don't feel any need to duck or run.....most miniatures look more like old shetland imports than the shetlands do....hello ...open the eyes ...plenty of pictures on the net if you go looking

: all these so called "old style" minis look like "old style" shetlands.......and I am not referring to The American Shetland which is truly a different breed

Here's a picture I took of the Classic stallion in my Avatar, Roadrunner Cody's Copy (in September at age 24), during his daily turnout time. He is barefoot in this photo and is 42 inches tall -
