Loren and I went into Scamer's pets in Aberdeen WA in the mall and there was a poodle in there that was a matted fecal matter mess! OMG!! So I could not stand it and the only person in there was a man who was helping other people. I didn't want to make a big scene in front of my son and the other people (But I guess I should have!) so we left. I called the place when we got home and a lady answered. She was NOT there at 11:00 am when they opened, I know because I was there, and so I told her about the dog and that I thought it was not a good idea to have a puppy in that condition in the main window like that. She starts to tell me he is not matted, it is just his puppy coat looking that way and that she brushed him. I said that when I was in there only an hour and a half ago he was matted and just wanted to let them know so they could do something about it. She gets all huffy saying that he was groomed by 11:00 when they opened because she did it herself. I started to tell her again that I was there before it opened and right when the man working there opened the door me and a few others went in and the poodle was in the window all matted with fecal matter stuck all over him. She said I was lying and she groomed him before they opened and then she hung up on me.

I'm going out on a limb and saying she was late for work this morning and got in trouble because the dog wasn't groomed before the doors opened; and that's why she was huffy.

No pet shop animal should look like you describe and puppy fur doesn't look like you describe.

You did the right thiing pointing it out, even if they didn't appreciate it.

We went in to see the pups one day and all 3 of them in the cage had poop and throwup all over them it was really sad but the lady told my daughter it was not a problem a quick wipe down if she was interested in one wouldn't take long...what a JACK A she was still makes me want to scream..

Call your local ASPCA. I hope you have one.

When we had a Docktor's Pet Center in our mall years back I used to be asked to leave

regularly because I'd stand there while people looked at the puppies behind the glass and

tell the the truth about where the puppies came from. And I'd also listen to the sales people

tell lies about each breed and then I'd tell the customer the truth. For example, one day

they were trying to get a lady to buy a poor little Afghan Hound puppy, and she said the coat

would be too much work for her. So the gal told her that if she shaved it, the hair would grow

back short and curly like a Poodle and wouldn't need any care! OMG, I've been there, done

that with that breed and I KNOW better! No, they didn't like me very well in that store at all. :bgrin

More recently, I stopped by a pet store to buy some frozen fish food for my Discus, and

they had many breeds of puppies in there, had never had any before. They were in ex-pens all

over the store as they don't have facilities for them. Suddenly I came across a poor little Cavalier

puppy all by himself in an ex-pen near the back of the store. He had some newspapers thrown down for

him, nothing soft to lay on and no water to drink. I looked around the store and the salesperson was

not even in the store, she was outside hanging with some friends in the parking lot. This poor little

puppy looked up at me with the very same face as my darling little Lizzie, and I looked into those

eyes so like hers and fled out the door in tears, jumped in my van before I snatched him up and

bought him and cried all the way home. Had I bought him, the store would just have "ordered" another one up from the puppy mill...I can't save them alll....I've never been back to that store..I refuse to patronize any place that will wholesale a puppy.

I was a pet store last spring and they had Bermuise Mountin Dog puppies, it just so happened that my mom loves those kind of dogs. I was just starting my project on puppymills at this time so I knew where they came from I told my mom about it and she did not get a puppy. We went back a few weeks later and the puppies were still there but so were some kind of miniature pinature Jack russle cross's and there was a paper there saying that they came from a breeder. And my mom kept saying "no, Vanessa thses are not mill puppies." A worker was close by and heard and came over to assure us that they were not from a mill I said "Mill or no Mill a good breeder does not need to bring their puppies to a pet store to sell them." My mom was having trouble understanding but later when we got home I reminded her that her brother breeds Labs and he has a waiting list a mile long and growing for his pups.

I hate pet stores that sell animals as well.

I will not go in pet shops that sell puppies and kittens.

I end up with too many foster rescues that come from pet stores, poorly bred, sometimes with health problems, personality problems.......

I will not spend my money in those stores. I buy my pet food at Pet Smart or Complete Pet Mart.

Ahhh. let's talk about Debbie's Petlands where "we all love the puppies and only sell them to good homes"

Well I've taken in 4 pembroke Welsh Corgi puppies in the past two years ALL from Debbie's! Two of them did not pass our temperment testing and were sent to their final resting grounds where they could bite anyone they wanted! ONE was a spayed girl who was raised in a cellar in an x-pen and left for days at a time while the man travelled for work. (That one was sweet), and the fourth was here for about 6 weeks and HATED ALL OTHER ANIMALS. Now when I say "Hated" I mean it, she looked like a basenji and could and would attack any other dog/ cat or horse that came near her. She couldn't be caught so trailed a 6 foot leather lead so you could step on it to bring her in. She ran my cats crazy and they refused to pass near her crate to use their litter boxes or eat. (it worked well for their diets!) and in the AM after spending the night in her crate she had "Attacked" anything so many times she had moved her plastic crate about 6 feet across the tile floor!

She loved people and was FINALLY placed with a couple on a dairy farm w/o any other animals, And yes, she still drags the lead!

When I called the Hyannis Debbies to ask for a donation to our rescue fund, they snet me to the Braintree, "Central office". I asked again for some financial assistance (this dog cost our rescue about $600.00 in vet bills alone) the answer was....and I quote! "We don't give to rescues. If we did we would never make any money."

I too stand outside the one in the Cape Cod Mall and tell people what they are really selling! Last Summer a truck carrying Puppy Mill puppies caught fire and burned somewhere here in the East. I couldn't help thinking that those babies were probably better off dead than in rotten homes where they are shuffled off and dumped at the pounds!

I'm with you Jody. I will not deal with companies that sell dogs. It just feeds the puppy millers.

I started showing and breeding dogs in the late 60's and over the years have had to step in to rescue dogs coming out of these stores or millers. I can't wait for the day when I have to rescue a dog from a miller on this forum.

Just last week I rescued a Kerry Blue Terrier from the local shelter. He is currently in a foster home and I think that is were he will stay. My guess is that he was a European import.

Oh yes, that was another thing I would set people straight on in my "educating" at Docktor Pet Center...

I would hear them tell people time and time again that these puppies were "from one of the top 5 breeders

in the country!" and the customer would ooh and aah over that fact...I would follow people out of the store explaining that a reputable breeder would NEVER wholesale their puppies to a pet store chain...I'm sure many people thought I was some weirdo...

What a happy day when they went out of business!

Just so you all know, I went in to find a hang on the cage bird bath not to buy a puppy. I would never buy a puppy from a pet store.

If I walk into a pet store selling cats or dogs, I immediately walk out. I love petsmart because they have the adoption programs available :aktion033: I got one of my cats thru them. I went in one day and there was a humane society there. The cat I fell in love with had been with them for six months!! And he's the sweetest well behaved cat I ever have had!

Years ago I worked in pet store...yes the kind that sell puppies.....I learned alot......then I worked for a store owner who was a dog handler/breeder and did NOT ever sell puppies from brokers. Twice we took in pups+ mom from some misguided person who ended up with a litter and an ultimatum from the landlord

We were allowed to educate about wholesale kennels and brokers, we kept a card catalog of local breed clubs and reputable breeders from those clubs, we also asked for feedback from any customer who ended up with puppies from any of our list (bad feedback would get those breeders circular filed). I love that pet shop...........I loved being able to refuse to sell a fish if the person didn't seem right.

I also do not patronize any shop that sells puppies. I will go in, I will comment, but I will not spend my money.

That reminds me, I need to buy one of my Corgi club's fundraising bumperstickers. They say to boycott Petland, ask me why, then has the word puppy mills with the zero and slash through it on the side. We are using the money to help fund our rescue program, in which I am an active foster home. I get so mad at the club members, if each would just foster one dog per year, we would have a much easier time with fosters. As is stands, so few will do it, that we few get many dogs in a year. It does turn your house upside down, but is so worth it to see these dogs bloom and go to wonderful new homes. It was tempting to keep the last one we had, an 8 month old poorly bred boy with a natural bob tail. We named him Stubby, and I am told he got to keep the name. I was extremely fussy about placing him, this boy's energy level was on overdrive. He went to a wonderful place in CT to live with another corgi and is in doggy heaven. She sent pictures of him playing, he was a tough one to let go, there was just something about that bad boy, but I have to let them go so there is room for the next one and the next one and the next one.

Yeah, they probably were from one the top 5 breeders, if by "top 5" you mean in numbers of puppies sold, not quality of the puppies.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have been kicked out of a Docktor Pet Center in a mall. lol. They even had a polaroid picture of me next to the register at the one I went to most often, with a sticker that said "please call security to have this person escorted out". *blush*

i don't shop anywhere that sells puppies or kittens. I just go in and make a nuisance of myself.

AMEN TO YOU, JODI!! If every breeder (and I do mean EVERY, whether millers, club breeders, or the "backyard variety") was as responsible as you are, we would not have the pet over population problem that we do in this country!! I think we might be on the same corgi rescue yahoo site!!

You done good by taking a stand.

The BBB is not going to be of much help if the Pet Store itself is not a member of the BBB in the first place just so you know that their hands are tied pretty much in that area.

What I would also do is to call the Mall office and complain, complain, complain. This is not good for the Mall and chances are, that the Pet Shop is breaking part of the lease in someway by displaying dogs in this condition and I'll betcha they can get their store even closed down if the Mall Office gets enough complaints.

Go get 'em

I think I love puppies more than anyone in the world! That said I have 5 dogs, all spayed or nuetered. It absolutely breaks my heart to go into the pet stores. I will not buy anything from a pet store that sells puppies. On our way home from Nationals last year we were getting fuel somewhere in Indiana in the middle of the night. A boxtruck pulled up at the pump next to us. The one guy opened the back to check on his cargo. I was shocked when I glanced in and saw shelves filled with crates full of puppies! When I tried to get my friend to look in, they quickly closed the doors and gave a nasty glare! It totally broke my heart.

I will admit that I bought my Doberman from a puppy mill. I answered an ad in the paper for Doberman puppies. I asked why they were so cheap and was told that because they didn't have their ears, tail, or dew claws done. I wanted a natural Dobe, so I went to look. It was a farm in the middle of the mountains, there were dogs running everywhere. They raised Dobes, Goldens, St Bernards and all kinds of little dogs. They were all well fed and healthy, but the Dobe puppies were running loose outside in December (its cold in Pa in Dec). They asked what I wanted, male or female as a scared pup ran past. I said female and they grabbed the pup running past. She was petrified, we were there an hour talking to the people and I held her the entire time. She hugged me and hid her head in my hair, I wasn't going to get her, but she was scared being there. The clincher was when they told methey really didn't want to sell her as they were going to add her to their breeding program :new_shocked: I picked her up the following weekend. I felt guilty leaving her there for a week. As soon as she was old enough she was spayed. I felt guilty supporting the "breeder", but in my heart I couldn't leave Gracie there.

On another note, anyone in the Philadelphia area I'm sure has seen the dog "Zero" on the news this week. It is a Pit Bull mix that was found wandering the streets of Camden this weekend. I don't know how the dog even had the strength to stand. He literally looks like a walking skeleton. It broke my heart, luckily he was found and is being fostered.
