Maybe someone has some suggestions...

out of my 3 stallions, I have 2 that seem to think their stall is specifically there for them to urinate in..I mean, good grief...have to wear hip boots and a gas mask to go in and feed...well, maybe that is a bit over stated..but still a sloppy stinky yucky mess.....I use shavings...but that doesn't work as they think "wow..whee...." and pee a river. I have tried tossing it out into their runs, thinking. the smell would entice them to do the deed outdoors......works for maybe a day then....back in the stall....terrible smell, especially when its hot and humid...any ideas?

What's wrong with them peeing in their stall? The first thing my girls and guys do when they get back in their stalls is have a good pee (as I've said in another post, that's when you can grab a sample for PG or drugs). They're "marking". How often are you mucking? My guys get a full muck (pee and poo) in the am and then poo is picked out throughout the day (depending on turnout). If your stalls are reeking, it's making me wonder if you are mucking out fully every day?

Stallions are creatures of habit and they particularly like "marking" the same spot (both urine and manure.) Stallions also have quite pungent urine.

My stallion is in a box stall, and i do use "Sweet PDZ" (which is a sort of barn lime, nontoxic) to neutralize the ammonia.

Since you have more than one stallion, definitely make a "spot" outside with ANOTHER stallion's urine shavings soaked. You will need to give your stallions time to adjust to their new area to pee, don't stop trying until it really becomes a habit.

However, some stallions are just very particular. My stallion likes to pee in the front of his box stall, and I have tried various methods to encourage him to use the back of his stall. He's not going for it.

Good luck,

Andrea

Hey Kathye, Seems all of my horses wait till they come inside the stalls and then pee and poop, like they've been holding it all day long.

Ok, now I have one very big Quarter Horse Sonny the Son Man, the Son of a Gun.... that pees by the gallons. He always has and this past year my gosh its like a tidal wave went through there. I've thought of getting a kyack and paddle at times just to cruise around in that stall, but I can't stand the urine smell.

He has a double stall, 10 X 20 and pees on one side, not on the side he eats.

He has the very first stall by the barn doors and as I'd approach the barn, I swear 10 feet away, all you smelled was his pee.......disgusting. He stunk up my entire barn and it did incredible things for my sinus infections.

I was bringing out urine soaked dripping wet shavings by the ton daily I kid you not, and going through them like water. I would go through about eight bags of shavings just for him a week. Got stall mats, and it made little difference. So..............I thought I would try that Woody Pet stuff finally this summer. But its not Woody Pet, its similar and another name brand. Equine ......something or other. Blue bag about $5.50 a bag.

So first day I strip the stall, sweep mats off, dump these pellets down, just one bag to try in the pee area ( I didn't spread them and left them kinda in a lump) and I wet them down with the hose as instructed. They are supposed to burst into shavings and they did no such thing. I messed around with them for half an hour and no amount of water was going to burst them into shavings as promised so I said heck with it and let Sonny in because it began to storm.

Later that night, HOLY MOLEY........he took one of his gigantic pees in the pellets and guess what?

Major pellet explosion. Nope, wasn't turned into shavings, but it turned into some kind of fine sandy product. NO smell at all, super exorbant, and it sucked up that ten gallons of tidal wave like perfect.

Well, one bag in his pee area lasts for about 5 days till I have to replish it. I don't have to buy a kyack after all!

My yearling QH gelding pee's only in his shelter. I watch him walk all the way across

his paddock just to go pee in his shelter. The shelter is outside and is only 3 sided but

BELIEVE ME it makes me gag to go in and clean it out. It reeks and this is out in the open. I use an ice cream bucket of stall dry in there about every 4 days to try and keep

the odor down and it is cleaned out everyday.

I have 1 stud and 3 mares. Each of them has their own spot to poop. Dusty poops right where we are building his stall. So he will most likely poop in his stall. Princess poops and pp's just up from the stalls but it is outside. Ellie does her stuff right in front of the gate into the chicken feeding and nest box pen (it keeps the horses out of the chicken food and the eggs). Then there is my sweet, loving, wouldn't do anything wrong
default_hypocrite.gif
Missy who thinks she needs privacy. She uses her stall. I even took the gate off of the stall. I have tried everything and she still goes inside to do her "duty"
default_whistling.gif
I even locked her out for a bit and as soon as I opened it up again, back in she went for her indoor potty. I don't you can stop them from going when and where they want. In fact as a teen I had a standardbred mare and when we went out for a ride, She would poop in front of this lady's house
default_blush.png
. If I went out the other direction and came back in past that house She would poop in front of that house
default_blush.png
I don't know why, But she did. The lady that lived there said I trained my horse to poop there

Aren't I a good trainer?
default_new_rofl.gif
:rofl Now if I could teach them to come in and use the bathroom.

There is no way I can tell it like Marty (and I won't even try) but I also use the pelleted bedding and highly recommend it. No smell, sops up the pee and lasts pretty well. I just remove the wet spots (and the poop of course) each day and add more pellets. But you do need to add water (or pee) when you first use them or they act like ball bearings!!!

In the winter I bring pellets indoors to fluff up with water, as I found they won't work well at super cold temps.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions...I had thought about putting a mat down but looks like that doesn't work..sooooo..will try those pellets...cool....I am so excited......pitiful huh?!

Ok, my question is going to be a bit on the opposite side....

How much water are you giving them? I mean, are you filling up their water buckets to the top? If so, they are drinking out of boardem and peeing more. I have one as described, stall nasty, smelly wet all the time until I cut him back on his water intake while stalled. I do put down shaving in the back of the stall and it helps. When we clean stalls, we do use lime to help dry it out while they are turned out to pasture during the day. Even in the winter time, I'll turn on the barn fans, to help dry out the stalls.

Kathye, the pellets are great - I've used them for several years now. I've finally arrived at what - for me - is the perfect solution. I do have mats, but wouldn't make any difference for this - I start with about 3 bags of pellets in a clean stall, spread them around and top with about a half bag of shavings. My only objection to the pellets is that they are like walking on marbles until they start to break down and will sure put you on your backside if you aren't careful LOL. Mixing in the shavings helps with that and softens it a little too. Everybody has their own brand now, I like the ones TSC has been carrying. Good luck - I have a couple of fillies that pee a lot......ugh. They break their bedding down a lot faster, but still no odor like you get with shavings alone.

Jan are you saying you put the pellets down without wetting them down with water? Sounds like a great idea with winter coming on. If I understand your post correctly, you're putting the dry pellets down then topping them with shavings. The urine itself is what causes the pellets to absorb and expand?

I use pelleted bedding with shavings on top. I do not pre-soak the pellets to break them down. They do absorb more urine if you leave them in pellet form.

I put shavings on top of the pellets so that it isn't slippery plus my stallion loves to lay in fluffy shavings.

Andrea

I use pellets that do not need to be soaked and I absolutely love them, since I have started using them this summer I don't have the strong urine smell anymore and they absorb wonderfully

I have one gelding who pees a river could almost float away my house LOL but he has the ability to go outside so I put him in a stall with mats and no bedding . He hates the splash and will not go pee outside.

they are only stalled at night and so far this has been working great he doesnt seem to miss bedding at all and I am happy his stall is not floating away

Yep, dry pellets with shavings on top. The only time I ever spray them down is occasionally in the summer if it's excessively hot and dry, and they get too dusty. I rarely strip out the stalls this way - they are picked at least once a day, twice if the horse is in a lot, and I add a bag or so of pellets once a week. I have mats underneath so it's pretty easy to pick out the wet spots. Really very little smell ever.

We have one stallion that does this. You fill his water bucket and come back later and it's all gone. We started rationing his water and he's actually leaving some in the bucket now.

I wouldn't rule out urinary tract or kidney problems, although since you have two of them doing it, it's most likely behavioral.

Another thing about stallions is that they don't often like to urinate where the urine will splash back up on their legs. If there's not much grass in their runs, they may be coming inside to pee so it doesn't splash.

The pellet shavings are AWESOME!! Much easier to pick poop too. We put some down in the wet spot, then cover with shavings. It's like kitty litter for horses!

My girls do it too. In fact, I can guarantee that within seconds of being put in their stall at feed time, I will hear waterfalls within seconds of my entry into the tack room. I've come to the belief it's part of the territory and so we routinely dig down to the wet spots, clear them out, spread lime and put down fresh shaving.

Several years ago we became true converts to the pellets.

There are a bunch of different brands for horse bedding.

The ones we like the best do not have the shiny finish.

They seem to break down faster.

We also do not wet them but leave them whole.

We clean early each morning, put down a layer of Stall Dry

and leave them to air dry until just before bedtime. Then

in each horses p-spot goes the pellets, shavings from the night

before go over the p-spot and then fresh bedding is put down.

Don't know why but all the horses have taken to pooping and

peeing while they wait to come in - that sure is nice. They get

a pony cookie for being so nice. I can turn out the lights and

leave the barn without thinking oh dang, I have to pick that before

I go back to the house.
