Mine is 10 years old- time to retire. It's slow, locks up, and refuses to play most days.

SO, any good recommendations? I use it mostly to surf the Internet, update my website, play assorted games, (none online, just ones loaded on the PC) and I have a program to make cards, flyers, etc....

I have 3 HP's! Desktop, laptop (bought tuesday), and pocket pc. The new laptop replaced my old one which is an HP also.

Dell has bad customer service. Gateway is good for laptops. I swear by Sonys for desktops, but Gateway desktops are nice too.

HPs are bad. I know of several that burnt out within a year. Definitely don't go with Emachines. They are cheap for a reason! They are worse than HPs.

Dell. Gateway. HP. They're all fine. I've used them all, but when it came time to buy a new laptop I went to Data Doctors near me. It's a franchise, and if there is one near you I suggest you check it out.

What I liked is, a three-year service plan comes bundled into the price of laptops and PCs and technicians will come to your home.

And, unlike with Dell, Gateway, HP, etc., you get to know the people who'd work on your laptop. The price is similar -- maybe even lower -- than the others and Data Doctors will transfer everything from the computer you're now using over to the new computer for no charge. Some computer places charge hundreds to do this.

You can check them out at datadoctors.com

We have two HP's here, my mother has one and my mother in law has one. All are two to five years old and all problems have been minor. Mine is the oldest and i need more ram but everyone else is happy with there's.

Oh be sure to get as much ram as you can to start with. Just helps all programs run better.

I've been happy with my Dell Inspiron.

I don't think I would personally go with HP, although I love my HP printers! I would possibly consider Gateway for a desktop but not a laptop.

Another option, I don't see on this thread but mentioned on another, you could always look into a MAC.

You go girl, keep buying them. It helps my stock.

I have three Compaq's, four if you count my PDA, a desktop, two laptops and my PDA.

I retired from Tandem/Compaq/HP three years ago. One job, the company name kept changing names with buyouts.

I know a few people who have bought Dell and Gateway's and have had nothing but problems, plus the customer service from what I have been told is HORRIBLE. We have always had Compaq's and LOVE them, never had any problems. We did have a Milwaukee computer a few years back and that one was good too, but you never hear of them. For me its Compaq all the way. Corinne

I had an HP and it was terrible, tons of problems... in fact, nothing but!

I now have a Toshiba Sattlite (laptop) and LOVE it. Have had it for almost two years and it's fantastic, likely wont ever own anything else (unless I have to go Mac for work in a few years).

Wanted to add... we have a brand new Acer at work, it's only 5 months old now... and it has been trouble since day one... nothing huge, yet, but constant little problems.

Well, I currently have a refurbished Gateway... it's all right. Nothing to get excited about. And there have been problems.

If I was getting a new computer, shopping around and starting over - I would go for an I-Mac... no doubt about it!

I have a Gateway laptop and I love it. I chose it because my brother-in-law had just spent a year in Afganistan with his and it still worked great even after being exposed to all the dust over there.

We currently have an HP desktop and a Toshiba satellite laptop and a Compaq laptop. We are very happy with them all, and we are very demanding users. Well, I am, husband mostly surfs the internet.

Compaq used to be absolute garbage, but since HP took the company over they've been great. We have HP printers, scanners etc. too.

I've got them all set up on a wireless network, best thing I ever did!

We have two Gateway's. Tech support kinda sucks unless you complain enought to get to the higher level of help (if you need it). We have been lucky not had anything that I couldn't fix on my own. Not the cheapest but Dell isn't either, but you get what you pay for. IMO

My Dad fixes computers for a living............if you have to have a PC, his choice all the way is E-Machines!!! His top choice though is a Macintosh of any kind.
