Moxie's cardi buddy went down with a prolapsed disc last wednesday....it was Thurs before we could get him into the vet we trusted, and he did some xrays, chiro, etc. Kip has recovered somewhat, but we don't know how much better he will get. His owners left today for a vacation, so he is left in my hands....sure hope he doesn't take a turn for the worst.....but I know what their decisions are....still doesn't make it any easier to deal with though....he will be reassessed after they return from their holiday, and more decisions will be made then. For now he is getting around and looks happy....

this is the part of owning animals that I hate....but it is worth it for all the joy and happiness they bring into our lives!!!

Linda calm down this happened to me and Tracey. I woke up one morning and she was completely paralized. We had the disk problem which led to hip dysplasia. It was getting very aggressive.

The vet had to get her in and out of my truck on a stretcher. It was bad. It was the real beginning of the end.

Now, my vet was able to get her stablized that time and it bought us another full year of mobility.

He gave Tracey a huge dose of cortizone and put her on prednesone and Rimedyl. The key is to keep the dog in a crate or something like that for the first few days to get stable again. No problem there, Tracey didn't want to move. I left her crate door open and she only came out for potty and went right back in there easily on her own. But no walks or nothing. The dog just has to be still if it's going to be stablized. The spine has to have complete rest and time for inflamation to go down.

Linda also the dog needs to lay on something very soft like those big dog pillows or better is one of those little beds that is off the floor a little bit. Tracey had an ortho matress pad and then tons of pillows on top of that. Let the dog go to the bathroom but absolutely do not encourage her to move other than that. Remember, keep her as perfectly still as possible.

I am so sorry about your pet ,I ahd a dachound that had the same thing and he was only affected in his back legs and we had a little cart to get around in....I hope they can do something for your little guy...

It's not that he "can't", he "won't"...maybe because I am holding him upand he doesn't feel comfortable with me doing that and doesn't understand that I want him to go pee...He did go pee at 4 am this morning. He hasn't drank any water (except for what I've given him) since yesterday early evening and he hasn't eaten since then either.

The earliest I could get to any vet would be 1230, since I have to wait for my boss to relieve me at work...sucks to be a working girl!

Kipling did this as well....he didn't pee or pooh for OVER 24 hours!!! He wouldn't! Wouldn't mess in the house, and wouldn't go when we would put him out because he needed help to do it....he is a very stubborn & proud dog

Just an update....first of all....THANK YOU Bonnie!!! Bonnie did a reading for me on Gunner and she is amazing!! She even had the only other 2 dogs I've had pass on come and talk to her....wow!! She made me cry and laugh and told me things that were very accurate and things I needed to know.

Ok, so now onto the vet visit...vet did a "pain accessment" and he does feel pain in his hind end and reacts to that pain. In his frontend, he does feel some pain, but doesn't react so much. Vet thinks that the neck is involved now. So, we decided that for today/tonight, they are going to treat with pain meds, steriods, IV cathetor, etc and re-assess in the morning. Vet wanted to do xrays, but I opted not to do them after talking to her, because basically it would just be confirming what we both already "know". IF he is responding to meds by the morning, we will continue that route...and if not...Gunner will let me know.

Thank you all for your thought and prayers....but while I was writing THIS, I got a call from my brother....so I am going to now start a new thread on THAT....this has NOT been a good day (or year!!!) for me! :-(

Any updates? Our min pin is about 6 years old and has had cruiciate issues since he was one, totally different issue, but it has left him not being able to use either of his back legs at time and it's heartwrenching.

My thoughts are with you and Gunner...

Oh, Linda...I've been there all too recently. I hope so much for whatever is best for Gunner. You know that if he can, he'll stay with you, but even if he has to go, he will always be with you in spirit.

Thank you all! I didnt sleep well at all....my dog was not in bed with me and this morning I didnt get "yelled at" to feed and take him out NOW (Gunner does this to me very morning....usually at 430 am...
