If you had a chance to buy a Rowdy grandson, would you?

So the mare I own is being bred to is a Rowdy grandson. I have an option to buy him. Hes never really been shown. Hes 13. His babies are beautiful. My budget is limited right now.

Advice?

Depends on the individual. Just being a grandson of Rowdy does not automatically mean a horse is perfection or worth a big price tag, There are hundreds of Rowdy grandsons out there. Look at who he is as opposed to who his grandsire was.

Yes but she just got back to me and said I could get all of her papers for $100. Will pay that.

However lovely he is or however he is bred is not the immediate issue IMO. You need to decide whether you have the faclities to house a stallion - do you have very safely fenced pastures plus suitable shelter - do you have a separate place for him to keep him apart from your mare (they may NOT get on together once she is pregnant/not in season any more) plus they will have to be kept separately when she gets close to foaling/has the foal. If you dont intend to keep breeding on a regular basis, then you really dont need a stallion - another pregnant mare would be a better companion for your girl and give her the friend that all horses need.

So my answer to your original question would be 'no, you dont want a stallion, whatever his breeding'!

Not really - you never could post pictures of horses you were looking to buy on the forum - you could ask people for their opinions via email though!

Just one thought - if you are just getting back into minis - why bother with a stallion? Why not just enjoy the mare you already have - and her foal, if she becomes pregnant? And see how that works out....

... I really do not think you need a stallion at this stage. JMO.

These are the questions I have been asking myself. As for the answers, do I want to breed? I do not know. As for can I safely conain him. I can make that happen. This is a by chance situation. I often find things hidden away that might be of use to me, if I chose to use them. I am 90% sure of my decision. But I wanted to turn to a source I relied on in my past, where the best advice of this nature could always be found. That is why I am here.

I still welcome advice.

As for enjoying my mare and fingers crossed a foal, that has been my main focus the entire time.

As others have said, maybe, maybe not. It's not a RARE find really. If he's what you want for a stallion and you want a stallion, then yes, but what the paper says doesn't matter if he is not physically the horse for the job.

He is Tri colored, which has always been my dream color package. he was well trained for the show ring, and demonstrated that for me with very little asking, setiing himself up almost perfectly (mind you a bit rusty) he is a gentleman with the ladies and knows how to work his magic.

As i read through the forum, I see a gelding bandwagon forming which I love. I dont want to go into a mini business. I see evidence everywhere I look that there just is no market. But I want a few to enjoy. Id love to get into the show ring and give it a second try. I hope my mare takes and gives me a wonderful foal, but I still have much to learn and a horse that can train me would help.

Would it be a shame if I gelded him?

It's never a shame to geld! There is an over abundance of stallions, and unless your guy was or produced a National or World grand champion no loss to the gene pool!

If he's sweet and well trained he might be better inclined as your show gelding to enjoy!

The pony in my avatar was sold as a stallion, I eagerly bought him back though the new owners had gelded him. Nothing wrong with a good gelding, ever!

I wouldn't have a stallion. If you were to breed you could just pay te stud fee and forget about worrying about a stallion

Just this summer i gelded my 19 year old Rowdy grandson out of Rowdys Eclipse. Bought him from NFC back in the day but I never did use him as a stud. The gelding procedure had me really worried because of his age but honestly he never missed a stride and handled it better than any other colt Ive had gelded, now I wish I had done it sooner.

BTW I believe you are allowed to give his name or who his parents were I think.

I have a Rowdy grandaughter in my barn. She's also a pretty color and will set up for me too. She is adorable, cute face, nicely put together, straight legged etc. and is and is full of herself. Would I breed her because of pedigree? Heck no. She's a hot mess. Moral of the story is I could care less what the papers say and I could care less if the horse stands nicely and is a pretty color. And no, would never be a shame to geld a stallion. Why everyone on the planet feels they need to breed just because they have a mare is beyond me. Why can't you just enjoy your mare as she is? Heaven knows there's a surplus of foals out there needing homes. Good luck to you whatever you decide.
