That's about it. They pulled him from the race tomorrow after this morning training run

I saw that. Would love to have seen a Triple Crown winner, but much MORE happy that the owner is putting the well-being of that lovely horse over winning a race!

He had some tendonitis show up after the work. I am glad that they acted in the horse's best interests... but what a disappoinment. I think he would have won it.

I just heard that on the radio at lunchtime... they said there's a tendon issue going on?

The angel on my one shoulder commends the owner and trainer for caring enough about their horse to scratch him despite the obvious disappointment.

The devil on my other shoulder wonders if his future stud fee would be higher as a might-have-been than if he were to lose the Belmont. (Obviously neither would be as high as if he had won, but were they playing the odds?)

I think I'll listen to the angel...

The devil on my other shoulder says... since the trainer is up for all kinds of charges in drugging horses to enhance racing... I say they are afraid of going to the "test barn" with the horse after the race.. So they pulled him.. Me bad.. I know...
:0.

Gotta protect this stud fees ;)

.

Yet another devil can't help but imagine how the public would come down on the horse racing industry if such a popular, brave horse were to suffer a devastating injury caused by a weak tendon.

Those devils are making it hard to hear the angel!

I am happy they pulled him if its in his best interest, and with such an emphasis on the race, there are many vets that have these horses under a microscope, I am sure. I can't help to feel the same as far as his stud fee goes.

I cannot imagine the letdown for the trainers and owners, however, I such a non-fan of TB racing. It is such a hard, cruel and corrupt "sport".

I'm with you Jll, not a fan either....never have been. All my friends are so amazed when they ask me about it (knowing I love horses) and I say "I don't know, I don't follow it".

The O'Neill investigation is for allegedly milkshaking horses back in CA - which is not drugs - and something many claim is not even effective - but still not good.

Not all kinds of charges - just that one. It is under appeal.

There were no fears about the "test" barn - the horses are under constant scrutiny and nothing would have been given to IHA. They were moved to a isolation/"detention" barn long before the race where everything that goes into them is carefully checked as per the rules. IHA was clean for his spectacular runs in the Derby and the Preakness - and his pre-Belmont blood test at the detention barn was also clean just before the announcement that he was scratched due to filling in his LF. Vet determined it was tendonitis. The horse ran on talent and ability - nothing more. Reddam (owner) and O'Neil may not be my favourite owner/trainer combo - but they did the right thing in pulling him and putting IHA's interests first. His value as stud would not be affected if he had lost the Belmont - he has still had spectacular wins. Now if he had won the TC, his fees and syndication potential would be a lot better.

I'll Have Another's pony was Lava Man - a winner of more than $5,000,000 - who retired at the age of 8 and found a second career back with his former groom and trainer. He disliked being retired to relax at the farm and is thriving and happy now that he is back at the track... IHA and Lava on the track...
