O kay everyone, here it goes.. I am in sad shape!! :DOH! The dreaded day is approaching, yeah the B word. Ever since my mom died, I really hate when my birthday rolls around.. The woman that comes out to cut my dads hair(she comes to the house for him, to make it easier on all of us..
default_wacko.png
)cut my dad's hair on Sat.. He wasn't answering the phone, so I hopped in the car to make sure he wasn't napping..He just didn't hear the phone. Called her back and she was there in 5 minutes.. Well i started asking her about my hair. I haven't been anywhere to have anything done with it in 2 yrs.(A spiral perm) I told that I feel uglier than dirt, and really need help. As long as nothing comes up on her end, she is going to be doing something to me this Sat..I finally have my bangs grown out, and have the long hair I always wanted, but I think that it and me as a whole looks terrible..I was thinking of having her do highlighting to the point I am light blonde everywhere.(Not sure why it is only light on my sides) I haven't ever changed my color and am worried. Plus she mentioned cutting some off
default_unsure.png
..So I had my son take some pic's of me tonight(Ihate having my pic taken, cause I feel that I look aweful everytime.)

So, what do you think I should do?? How much to cut off
default_ohnoes.jpg
and about the lighter blonde..(I need a massive complete overhaul, but only the hair right now.. Big step here..)

And she is going to do something to my son's hair too, spice him up some, and we are going to get a family pic of all of us in front of the tree, when we get it up..

So all of you "In style" people out there, help me get back to being presentable again..

Suggestions, Please

Thanks

Well I'll bite

Get radical

I get my hair down that long every couple of years because it just grows like a son of a gun. Then I get it whacked. There's nothing really wonderful about keeping hair that long once you hit a certain age because it gets thin and split like crazy and ages a woman I think.

I'd let her whack all that hair off so she can bring you into a modern do and you could donate it to Locks for Love

Perfect for Christmastime

I'd have it whacked up off the shoulder so she can give it a shape and have layers and bangs shoved in and sculpted around your face

Definitely do color and add highlights because that's the icing on the cake and don't be scared because it will grow right back if you don't like it

I suggest you do a search for hair styles on Oprah.com. Be realistic, not only about what you feel comfortable with, but also about what you have to work with. Elaborate 'dos, color and highlights only look good on those willing to keep up on them. With the right style it is possible to keep your hair easy to care for and natural without looking ratty or out of date.

Also check this out--this information has helped me tremendously:

http://www.oprah.com/health/beauty/slide/2...2_350_201.jhtml

And there are many easy to follow make up tips, as well:

http://www.oprah.com/tows/pastshows/tows_2...0000914_d.jhtml

"Don't use black or liquid eyeliner, and don't line the entire eye."

"PS." You are NOT "uglier than dirt," nor do you "look awful" in your pictures. Quit thinking like that and let your natural beauty shine through.

Thanks Marty for taking a "bite".. I am wanting to do radical, just scared.. It just seems it took so long to grow, but hey.. Someone else might need it more.. I really thought if I got enough cut off to do that..

mininik, oops, I am off to a bad start.. I am over plucked and a raccoon :DOH! The black eye liner has always been me. If I don't, I think it makes my eyes look like I am sick.. Have to work on the eye brows.. Just never wanted a unibrow
default_blush.png
Those links are very helpful.. Thanks, do you there is hope for me, Yet??

There's always hope. You really don't have to have expensive clothes, tons of make up or elaborate hairstyles to look incredible. In fact, I think people look more attractive the less they use fake "enhancements." For you that means no more plucking outside of the right lines (You are FAR from having a unibrow - let those eyebrows grow in and no, it won't be easy to leave the tweezers down!) and less eye make up, plus a few layers trimmed into your locks. If you feel like your eyes need "something," try a little concealer as suggested in the links above.

Im a liscensed cosmetologist, and if you sat down in my chair right now here is what I would suggest. (keep in mind, I cut my hair that was butt length all off in november of 06. The back was 1" long and spiked out, so I know hard the change is) Nothing I say is to be offencive, Its just the advice I would give it you were my client.

I would cut the length so that is was between your armpit and where your elbows are in the picture. Thats still considered long, but it will make your hair look much healthier and give it more body.

I would probably start some longer layers around your shoulder or collar bone which will also help give some body and bounce, and then some angling around the face. I wouldnt do a really severe angle, since you said that you just got your bangs grown out, I would leave it long enough so that you could still get it into a ponytail, but make it noticeable enough so it frames your face nicely when you wear your hair down.

Locks of love requires 10", so that should be enough if you wanted to donate it.

Did you ever hear that peoples hair gets lighter in the summer? Well, its true, and that probably what has happened to your hair. The hair furthest from your scalp has been in the sum much more than the hair near your scalp, which would cause it to me lighter.

Being that it's winter, I wouldnt go light blonde right now, I would save that for summer. I would probably color your hair the darker shade all over, maybe with a warmer tone, then put a few caramel foils on top to accent your face again.

Hair grows at rougly 1/2" a month, and once the hair at the ends gets so old it just starts breaking off. A lot of people say that their hair grows so long then stops. Actually what happens is after not trimming it in so long the ends get brittle and and break. Its most obvious when people say their hair isnt growing, but they color it and have a 1" regrowth. Now, if the hair wasnt growing, their roots wouldnt be a different color.

As far as makeup, yes the eyes are a little overpowering, but I also wear black eyeliner on top and bottom, and I also wear my eyebrows very thin. I would leave your eyebrows grow in a little more towards your nose. I've been guilty of being too obsessive over a unibrow and waxing half my eyebrow off, so its better to catch the problem before you have it. Its too easy to keep taking more and more everytime you tweeze. Ideally, you should be able to hold a pencil vertically on the side of your nose. Your eyebrow should come to the pencil. I personally balance my eyeliner by wearing a light or neutral "shimmery" eyeshadow directly below by eyebrow. I blend it good with my fingers though so I dont look like a pastel princess. A little lip color would really balance the eyes out and help keep you from looking washed out.

I personally never wore lipcolor until this year, I always used to just wear a tinted balm. I always hated the way lipstick looked, but now I like it better if I apply it with a lip brush, or if I dab it on, instead of using the lipstick like a crayon.

What about when you do cut it off, donate it to locks of love or somewhere that makes wigs for kids with cancer? I've never had my hair quite that long but mine is so thick and heavy I'd be bent over backwards. I am no expert on style, but just keep looking around and see what you think you'd like, come up with more than one idea and then see what your hair person thinks, or you could take pictures from the internet and you and play with photoshop or some other photo editing program and cut your face into the hairstyle and see how that does. Would be time consuming but there has to be some program out there that does this somewhere. I'll see if I can look one up on the internet

HI! I just want to say you are very pretty! I love the look you are giving the camera in the first pic! I too give that 'just take the picture before I kill you' look!

I love your hair color!
default_wub.png
It is so golden and shiny. I would not color it. Maybe some contrasting highlights, but dont go crazy, you have a beautiful shade already!

As far as a style, I have no styling skills, so my best advice is really think about how much you want to mess with your hair every day and go from there.

and oh, do I understand the eyebrow problem!

I have naturaly black hair, and my eyebrows can be described as thick hairs that grow long and stick out in odd directions. Old man eyebrows for sure!

I just saw myself in pics on Halloween, I too hate myself in pics. Well, I had to admit to myself,

I have drag queen eyebrows.
default_new_shocked.gif
You know soooooo thin and mine are sooooo black. It is bad.

So I am growing them out some and man are they ugly! the hairs are growing in facing the wrong direction lol! BUt I am sticking with it, and already one looks better, the other has a terribly placed bald spot still. So I am so cute right now, untill you get close enough to see the hairy catapillers on my face

Good luck and you are not alone with makeover troubles!!!

And please post an after pic!

you're beautiful and I love your long hair. Maybe just chop enough off to give it some body and shape =)

try this site, it lets you see different hairstyles

I think if you're gonna let her cut your hair you should just get it whacked like Marty said. If you don't like it when it's done, it'll grow back.... I also think donating whatever is cut to locks of love is a wonderful idea too!!!

This is fun! I think you've got great potential, and I think you've been given some great advice. I can't wait to see the after!! You'll be gorgeous.

I should do this, too:) Good Lord I could use an update!!

Your hair is beautiful...so are you
default_wink.png

I would get it cut about to the middle of your back and add some long layers, I would not do bangs...as far as color...I wouldn't do a thing to it, a malibu treatment would be good too, it will refresh your color and remove any buildup.....gosh I wish I had your hair!

someone else mentioned about makeup...I think black eyeliner below your lower lashes, but not all the way to the tearduct...like 3/4 of the way from the outside corner .and add some on the top lid from the outside corner to about half way across your lid...not on the insides of the lids though...when you put it on the inside it closes up your eyes and makes them look smaller...this way you don't have to totally give up your eyeliner, but makes a softer appearance and opens up your eyes....btw...I am no way a beauty expert! I could use some help myself!

You guys are great!! Thanks for all the advice. Believe me, I need all the help I can get..I have issues with low self esteem..NEver have thought highly of myself at all..But you guys made me feel better,
default_wub.png
maybe there is hope for me..
default_wacko.png
SO keep the ideas coming..
default_laugh.png
..And hopefully I'll have a new look after Sat.(haven't heard back from her yet.) If not this Sat. then when she can fit me in.. Just gives me more time to make up my mind :DOH!

You're so beautiful!!!

You deffo need to hack some of that hair off, it's way too long. I would say just below your shoulder maybe like one or two inches down from your collar bone at the longest. Please don't get a perm! haha. Don't do bangs, I don't think it's a great choice for your facial structure, that and they are so out of season! haha. Leave the colour as it is, if you really wanted to do something maybe some darker undertones here and there...although not chunky...subtle is key.

You've got a gorgeous body from what I can tell and those clothes are not flattering you at all! When you're ready for help in that department let us know.

mine grow like that too, sometimes they stick straight out..I put hairspray on them...heehee...actually Brooke Shield eyebrows are back in again, so in reality we are instyle and we didn't even know it!

Your very pretty and you have beautiful hair!!!

I would want to keep it longer, somewhere mid back.. a few inches above where your elbows are in the picture.

Color wise, dieing a light/medium brown then adding blonde highlights would look beautiful IMO.

What ever the case, we need "after" pictures

You can do it, I have faith!

I went last month and had mine whacked off.

First time in 31 years I'd been in a salon.

I have naturally curly hair and I'd just get it wet in the shower

and cut and inch off each month or two inches if I missed a month.

I kept it at waist length but most of the time I was wearing a baseball

cap or had it braided or pinned to the top of my head.

Things jumped out and grabbed my hair when it was down, from screen

door handles to the ponies chomping on it. Figured if I was keeping it

out of the way all the time, it was time for a change.

It's shoulder length for the first time in a gazillion years and it feels great.

Don't have to wait all day for it to dry, lots of advantages. And it

grows back......

Go for a change - you just might like it!

You are so pretty! I'd LOVE to get my hands on you for a "make-over"!

I'd whack off the hair to the armpits, but have the front section at an angle, to make your hair curve a bit and create a frame around the front part of you. Color would be a dark blonde with lighter highlights. I'd also allow your eyebrows to grow in a little bit.

Makeup......I have a pet peeve about black eyeliner all around the eyes. For a light hair colored person, it seems harsh in contrast. My preference is a brown or gray liner and masquara, with a very light application of light brown shadow -- not on the lid, but just behind the eyelid. You have lovely eyes and it will make them appear even bigger. Then, apply a tiny bit of peach colored blush from your lower temple area down to the top part of your cheek bones, and a little on your chin for balance. (I prefer using powder blush.....and no overall facial makeup......but I'm not an overall facial compound type of person.)

Gosh, you have SO MUCH to work with! You'd be a joy for one of those shows that likes to do the "Before" and "After" type stuff! You have beautiful almond shaped eyes, great bone structure, healthy hair......even your mouth is pretty! (I'd only use lipstick very lightly for certain occasions.....your natural color is lovely.)

Jodie,

I know how well you like to help people but i would not cut your hair all off I would get it layered and maybe put the highlights in that you want....I am very disappointed that you say you are uglyier than dirt that you are NOT......And sometimes you have to look past what others say and you know who I am referring too...

Jodie you have the looks and the great personality that make you who you are . I would not change unless you are doing it for you...Remember I know you a little better than some and know what you have been going throu .But ultimatley it is your choice ....Remember I am here if you need to talk ...love your mini friend , melanie
