Very tricky arithmetic!

Note: This must be done in your head only .

Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30 .

Add another 1000 . Now add 20 . Now add another 1000

Now add 10 . What is the total?

Scroll down for answer.....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you get 5000?
The correct answer is actually 4100.
If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator!
I missed it
How did you do?
I got 4100. I read the problem through completely before doing any math. Then I went back, added 1000 + 1000 + 1000 + 1000 = 4000 + 40 + 30 + 20 + 10 = 4100.
Where you're going wrong and what I almost did doing the problem the way it's set up is that as you add the smaller numbers your mind thinks it's adding another 1000 (to get 5000) when it's only adding 100 (to get the answer, 4100).
I got 4100 but can see how easy it would be to get 5000
