I have adopted two children Internationally and been involved in the adoption community for many years. I have friends that have adopted domestically (infants), through the foster care system (infants-teens) and Internationally (infants-teens) and feel every family should do what is best for that family. ALL CHILDREN NEED HOMES, not just the ones here. We took the classes required by our state, and several extras that were recommended and in the end, decided adopting from foster care was just not right for our family at that time. We had two children already in the home and besides risking our heart, we would be risking our children's heart (if the foster child was removed from our home) and their health and well being if a foster child abused them because we were not told of their background. This happens, we couldn't risk it. It is something we may choose to do in the future when our children are older or grown.
We chose International because that is what was right for our family and where God led us. The children in other countries if not adopted may die before they are old enough to leave the orphanage, or when kicked out at a young age (some as young as 9) are forced to turn to crime, prositution or they starve. Most are never given an education.
Contrary to other statements, we are not left wing liberals, we are conservative Christians, as are many, many adoptive families. We adopted because we wanted to. We wanted more children and wanted to give a home to children who would otherwise not have one. We have biological children and could have chose to have more, but chose to adopt instead. However, we feel we are the ones given an amazing gift from God, not the other way around, as our children can only be describe as incredible blessings! They have taught us about the true meaning of life.
As to the Madonna situation, well, I don't understand why she chose a country that has laws against International adoption for starters when there are several African countries that have adoption programs. I also don't like that she donated money and stipulated that is be used to build schools and teach her religion of Kabalah, but that is my opinion. Angelina pulled her own strings when adopting Maddox, since the US was not allowing any Cambodian children US Visa's at that time while they were investigating some problems in the country and system. She simply took her child to another country until she could get his US Visa. Not illegal, just not possible for most families due to money. She then adopted Zahara from Africa after trying to adopt a little girl from Russia that fell through. This was all before Brad.
I do not slam people who have adopted domestically or through foster care, I applaud them, just the same as if they adopted Internationally. Adoption is an amazing thing, definitely NOT second choice or second best.
