I've always loved draft horses from a distance. Their size is intimidating to me.

Is anyone working on a mini that looks like a mini draft horse feathers and all?

That would be so cool, maybe something for me to research and work on?

Not anybody that I know. Years ago the miniature was more drafty looking - heavier body and heads, shorter necks and legs. But the breed has gone to much more refined, "horse looking" animals.

They would not do well in today's show ring

I'd love a small herd of mini Friesians, all running around with their beautiful long manes and leg feathers just a blow'in in the breeze. The beauty, the black, the body.Even if they didn't do well in the ring.

Not deliberately working on draft minis, but I do prefer my girls to have a bit of substance/bone. In the big horse world, we always used to go by the 'rule' (going back more than a few years here LOL!!) of putting speed and grace on top of strength and stamina, in other words a lighter type stallion (TB) on to a heavier mare (hunter/draft) to produce a 'classy' hack/light hunter/eventer.

In the UK we are lucky enough to have a large amount of mini horse shows, and classes are often divided into weights - light, hunter, and draft, which gives everyone a chance to show their individual preferred style of mini, and I have to say tht there are some extremely nice minis being produced with both substance and movement - great brood mares for the future!

You might want to look into the Fell Pony. I believe that is a 'drafty' type of pony. Not a miniature, but much smaller than a Friesian.

This is my gelding Koda Bear. He is a full brother to the Mare in training Duckie. You can't see the feathers real well but you can see that he is heavier boned. I know they are out there you just have to search for them. Might not win in the show ring but they are still great driving horses and will excel in CDE VSE competion and parades.

And a picture of Koda's Dam D/F All That Jazz aka Jasmine this girl in trot. I cut her forelock before winter but when left to grow it will grow off the end of her nose. I have also trimmed her mane which just continues to grow along with her tail. I believe she looks very much like a Fresian Mare after looking at pictures of them. She also moves like the ones I saw in the pictures.

There is probably a mini out there that can exemplify every breed type imaginable! I love this breed! I've seen miniature draft class. It's really neat. I used to be in love the powerful look of Sids Husker. Very much a QH type. I think Lex's sire Fallen Ash Scouts Irish Fable looks very much like a beautiful Morgan of a different color (imo). Lex looks a bit like a TB. My mare Tori is similar to a mini Friesian w/out feathers.

She has a longer face. At one time our vet said he had never seen a prettier mini

I still think she is a beauty

She has one of those rare perfect coats.

I have thought seriously about trying to breed a mini form of gypsy! If I was 20 years younger, I'd already be working on it! They might not win in the showring, but I'm betting they'd develop a following real quick with CDE'ers!

But wouldn't such an endeavor keep you young?

I'd sure love a field of mini gypsy horses. ok ok and a field of Friesian mini's, and maybe some appy mini's

and ...........

some of this and some of that.

IMO a person should have in their pasture what they love. Fads come and go. As you said there will be a need in the very near future for CDE horses. More bone, more muscle and a stable mind. A mini freisan or a mini gypsy vanner would be awesome. You could be the reverse situation. If you really want to show and win in the arena with what is winning now you can always pick up a weanling to take all the way while breeding what you are truly passionate about. The area we live in is becoming more and more involved in CDE and there will be a need for those horses. I wish you all the luck in whatever type of horse you choose to breed for and what a better way to connect with your grand children and keep them involved.

Keep us updated as you collect your breeding stock. I do believe you will do great!

A couple of months ago there was a 3 or 4 page thread on draft style mini's. There were a couple who looked just like mini vanners. I tried to find the link for you but couldn't find the thread....maybe someone else can remember it and post. There were some cool pics.

Carol - you're so funny! I wanted a Fresian badly, how I ended up with three black minis when we started with this breed. We have usually around 12-14 black ones - favorite color!, But getting the mane/tail and the movement and the feathering... LOL!

I did try with one mare - never had a black foal for me though!

Miniaturized versions of the big horse breeds... I truly hope that will happen in my lifetime.

Hi,

I've not posted in a while very hectic lately. But I did want to ad my 2 cents in this. I think of course the heavier, draft/quarter style miniatures are the "old" style. But also it would be a breeding concern of mine to want to try to produce the heavier bone. That's where you get into foaling problems because of the bigger bone (not all because of th heavier bone, but you deffinately take a bigger risk).. and there's LOTS of those types of minis out there and the older style is much harder to sell. But that is just my opinion.

If you are breeding larger boned for driving CDE I have been told there is a need for those horses.

I have also been told that I would be wasting my time and money showing any of my horses as they are not what is winning in the ring today. All of my horses are sweet and gentle. No kicks or bites including my stallion. They have enough substance to be driven, ridden, jump and look pretty doing it. They are gentle enough that small children can handle them and I don't worry about it. I enjoy them and so does my daughter as she grew up with them. Isn't that what miniature horses are truly about afterall.

I bred my mare Jasmine to my stallion Jimmy both larger boned five times and got five strong healthy foals with larger bones and not one issue with the foaling. I would never attempt to breed a larger boned stallion to a finer boned mare as that could cause foaling issues for the mare. As with all animals there is always a possibility of issues when you breed. The choice of breeding certain pairs is in the hands of the humans who own them.

I haven't bred for six years because I didn't want anymore horses to care for. I love the horses I have and found it really hard to part with the foals after raising and weaning them.

I guess if we left the Feathers on his legs he would count as a Drafthorse.

He is Redrock Color Me Flashy and he does turn heads when you go into Halter classes with him and believe it or not he has walked out of some of the halter classes with the Blue Ribbon. Hooked up in a cart or wagon he is a power house.

I also really like the looks of the Draft horses..

I think we have to remember there are two types of breeders those who breed for the masses and those who breed for the show ring.

Those who show are a small percentage of our breed- it is very possible to have a very correct horse that is not the "type" or "fad" of the ring today.

Many a halter horse has taken a breed where it did not want to go according to the masses.

THe QH is a good example of that. What a halter person looks for is not what a performance person might look for and neither may be what a regular horse loving owner is looking for.

I think we have the same issue with our minis although of course instead of creating massive animals we are going the opposite creating ultra refined minis. Only time will tell if this will appeal to the masses

My point I guess is it is not always necessary to breed for the show ring. CDE and ADS driving is becoming more popular and they do look for a different type of horse. One as equally as correct so that it can perform but the "fad" or type is different as we push the versatility of this breed and it becomes more recognized there will be a need for different types of minis.

If you want to see a true draft in miniature, check out my neighbor's little guy, Speedy. He is the only mini that I have ever looked at and really thought "Draft." I have to use a link to his picture as he is not mine and I don' want to get in trouble!
