York Beach, Maine originally from Ireland!
I have a young stallion, he was 2 in May and he has never been bred. He is now living with my 4 mares, I believe three are bred and one is not and he shows NO interest in any of them. The newest mare was kept seperate because I did not want him to be all over her, Fat chance, he just bullies her away from the food?

Not to be too graphic but I have never seen him remotely excited down there??

I just sold my other stallion, who was so sweet and gentlemanly but he grunted and was very clearly a stud if the girls were away from him for any length of time.

This stallion never challenged the other one and really just acts like a bossy gelding???

Will this all change next year? Are some stallions slow starters?

It makes him VERY easy to handle but I would like to see some studdish behaviour, never thought this would be my concern with a young stallion?

He has both jewels and everything looks normal down under!

Just curious?

He is also very naughty about his food and rather than nipping and nudging the others if they come too close he shows them his rump and kicks repeatedly. He is very aggressive with his kicking but he is not top of the pecking order.

He seems much more into his food than his lady roommates?

Any opinions or similar experience with this would be of interest!

It very well could change in the near future, if not next Spring when the "sap" starts to rise.

I have had stallions all over the map for behavior, at varying times of the year, but usually, when they mature, they do show the signs and attitude, even if it's a little subdued for the mellower ones.

I have one here that when he came here, was so excitable and "ready" that he kept tripping himself and would not leave the girls alone. He made so much noise and bluster, I thought he'd never be a suitable "herd" horse (to have him out w/my mares). He even would wrestle them down to the ground in order to have his "way."

That was NOT what I was going to put up with, when they said NO, he needed to back off, and he didn't. I was pretty upset, but he's grown out of it (he was 1 and 2 when these behaviors happened.) He also was not fertile as a two year old (or at least none of the mares we bred took).

He's now out with his mares all the time, even the foals, and he does not chase anyone, and pretty much ignores the foals/lets them sniff him and be around him.

I guess what I'm saying is that he is still awfully young to be saying "dud."

The food aggression is fairly typical, though most of my stallions have been very willing to share their meals w/their girls, if even only the favorites.

Maybe get him a subscription to Penthorse?

I admit it...I'm hopelessly immature, but the image that brings to mind is hysterical!

Thank you for the responses and the advice!

I have to agree Susanne, I was giggling like a school girl reading that post!!

Silly boys!!

Thanks for the reassurance Nootka, he does seem immature so perhaps that is it!! He was very submissive to the other stallion, so perhaps he has not fully grown as a boy yet!!

Now where do you get that Penthorse

Yup, you got it, girls, he was literally falling over "himself" to show off and I laughed myself silly watching it, but I was a bit horrified inside and embarassed FOR him.

(Picture him, in all his "glory" falling over in mid-"prance" in the mud and ending up on his back, sliding down the hill, legs flailing and ummm...his pride deflating...)

Heheh boys will be boys. He was terribly incoordinated as a yearling, but he's found himself as a three and four year old.

Some of them take longer than others.

If he's just two then his immaturity isn't uncommon.

You did mention that you thought three of the four were bred - well if you're mare isn't showing heat and he's showing no interest she may be as well.

Plus many minis really start losing interest with the shorter days/cooler weather - not all - but many!

Put him up in the barn for a couple of days. Take him out to the mare when she's in season, not when she's standing around looking about as exciting as a handbag!! Light blue touch paper and stand back!! If you have a two year old with manners with mares just count your lucky stars- turning a youngster out with mares is NOT something I would ever do, I'm afraid. All my two year olds have been more than ready. On the other hand- the one time I did run a stallion (never again!!) I never saw him cover a mare!! They got in foal by osmosis, I think

Oh Liz, you just cracked me up! My dear you can turn a phrase.

Fiona, I also think he is just immature. Glow is alot like your fellow except he became very aggressive with me if I interfered with his feeble attempts at "the act". He reminded me of an adolescent boy fumbling in the back seat of an old Chevy for the first time or two. He never did quite "get it this year. When he broke down the gate and attacked me like a 17H stallion for catching him and taking him from the mares, dear Ginny just took over. Now he is in Va at stallion boot camp I guess. I miss the brat and have high hopes for getting a mature handleable 3 yr old to use for breeding when I feel ready.

I'll bet next year he'll have it all in "gear" for you and your ladies. A bit of Chanel no5 and a ribbon and he'll be so in love...............

Thank you all for the laughs and the reassurance!

I do think it is true about the shorter nights etc calming everyone down!

Here in Maine everyone and everything slows down at this time of year and by winter everyone is just cuddling up to stay warm!
