Is this pattern the start of "lacing?"

I think this is the start of lacing on my mare, Weebiscuits Media Luna, "Lucy." She is the horse in my avatar. Last year when she turned five I saw two white spots appear on her back after she shed out in the spring, and this year there's a lot more! She is LWO positive. Whether or not that makes a difference in lacing I don't know.

She's never had rain scald, never had injuries, and never had a harness on her back or anything at all that could have caused scarring or white hairs to appear. The horses are put in stalls in the barn every night, and are only out on pasture four to five hours a day, and then brought into a shady dry lot, so I know it's not weather related in any way.

So... opinions?

Well, that's just too cool! I love lacing, but have never seen a horse in person that had it, and here one of my own surprises me with it! I can't wait to see how it develops, especially as she's all black except for a snip on her nose and a half moon on a rear foot. It should end up pretty interesting!

Last year she only had the two white spots near her mane and they really have multiplied since then.

We had a mare that didn't get it until she turned 10 and it's really neat. All she has is what your mare has right now so it didn't get too wild, but I still like it

I think a long time ago someone posted a picture of her shetland stallion (if i remember correctly) who ended up with lacing all over his body. It was very cool!

ohmt, when I was doing a web search trying to find photos of lacing, the LB thread you referred to showed up in Google. The thread was a couple of years old, and none of the photos showed up, but in that thread everyone who had seen the photos of the stallion you mentioned were really impressed with how it looked! I hope whoever owned that stallion reads this thread and posts pics of him again!

If anyone else has a horse with lacing, I'd love to see your pics!

I had never heard of "lacing" before this mare. This is my 3 year old. Her dam has lacing also, but it didn't show up til she was 7!!

I've never heard of lacing? Does anyone know what causes it? is it just a natural color pattern coming through? Is it caused by harness wear?

I don't believe anyone knows what causes lacing at the moment. It is a genetic pattern but I think that's all that's known. I believe they've tried to link it to sabino and possibly appaloosa, but haven't found anything yet.

I went to look at a pretty mare last night that had lacing on her back. It was really neat to see if after reading this dicussion. I wish I had remembered to take my camera for pictures.

It was too bad she was a WILD THING and more than I could handle at this time.

My mare Ruby, at about... 13 years old?

We have lacing in our herd and had someone working on horse genetics come here a couple years ago to take pictures and record each horse's pedigree. Haven't heard anything since.

At the moment, last I heard, lacing doesn't seem to be appy related. And none of ours have appy in their background, so that fits. But Sabino seems to be a big possibility. And yes, it is definitely genetic.

Some folks don't like it, but I happen to think it's kind of neat.
