Spanky isn't registered. From what I have read if I get him hardshipped into the AMHA (which I have till 2013 to do) then I can also get him hardshipped into the AMHR, correct? Well here is my main question.

I don't really want to pay the $1200 to hardship him if I'm only going to get one foal from him, so would it be possible to breed him and have him cut after she is confirmed in foal, then register him as a gelding?

If he isn't registered as a stallion then his foal won't be able to be registered and will have to be hardshipped.

I understand that. The foal would be able to be registered progeny hardship right? (since they require DNA testing anyways)

Seems to me that would work for you, but I would call AMHA and confirm this before you do anything. They are great there at the office and are always extremely friendly and helpful when I call with registration questions.

Just a thought, with the economy as it is, there are literally thousands of quality, registered horses for sale for less than the cost of hardshipping.
Very good point, one we should all keep in mind in this economic situation as we make a variety of horse decisions. There is never a better time to upgrade your stock than when the market is at a low like it is now.

l think l know what your saying but l don't think that works. He needs to be hardshipped either as a stallion or a gelding...l don't think hardshipping him in as a gelding at the lower fee which is what l think you are wanting instead of paying the 1200 is going to help you any because you still need to file a stallion report for next years foal to get in...

But a late stallion report could be filed-i would just call the office tomorrow and ask. I would think so because if a stallion were to hypothetically breed a mare through a fence and while you had no idea the mare was in foal had him gelded and then got your little surprise the next year, I would think the registry would still allow progeny hardshipping if the gelding were hardshipped in.
