Have you seen the photos of the badly burned bison being chased by a grizzly? They were sent to me yesterday and I was so sad for the bison. He'd been so badly burned in one of the boiling hot springs, and yet he managed to get himself out of the water & then still had the strength to try and outrun the grizz that would put an end to his suffering. Poor fellow.

I was sure the bear would have got him, but according to an update I've found on the story, he got away from the bear but was killed by park rangers--he was so badly burned that they put an end to his suffering. I am glad for that at least.

I've heard that there are always a number of animals that die from falling into the hot springs or mudpots in Yellowstone--I wouldn't have thought one of them, like this bison, would have been able to get out of the water once it fell in.

Nature is harsh!

Here is the link to the story, with the photos. I see it does also include the update about the bear losing out & the bison being destroyed the next day.

Wow, that is amazing that he as there to see it as well as take pictures. Part of the circle of life.

Poor thing. I guess maybe they get near to the mud pots and hot springs to get warm. Sometimes too warm.

Yes, they go there usually only when it gets too cold-below zero. They head to the hot springs to warm up and eat the grass around it. They can't stay long though because it poisons them.

Poor thing. I'm glad the park rangers put him down. I always love watching animal planet documentaries on wild animals, but I come close to tears when some of the animals get badly hurt and the people filming can't put them out of their misery.
