One of my neighbors minis has come down with Potomac Horse Fever and she isn't doing well at all. They had the vet out right away and she has been started on meds but she is even worse off today than yesterday. I hope she pulls through but the vet has told them that this is the worst year for it that she has seen and that she has lost 3 horses to it in the last couple of weeks.

I just ordered our vaccines yesterday and debated whether or not to order the vaccine for ours. I haven't heard of any horses down here having it. However we do have Encephalitis and West Nile cases in FL every year. Good thoughts for your friend and her mini.

What is Potomac Horse Fever? How do horses get it? Is it included in the needles you get already?

Potomac Horse Fever is used to describe dozens of strains. My vet recommended AGAINST the vaccine, because it only covers a few, and chances of it actually helping is slim to none. I had a horse come down with it last year. Thank God she pulled through (with a $3,000 vet bill). A friend lost a horse last year. It's a horrible disease, my horse became very lethargic, stopped eating, severe diarrhea, high fever.

Thank goodness she is doing better.
