I remember this being discussed but am not sure I ever totally understood about the age a stallion has to be in order for his foals to be registered.

Is it in AMHR that he has to be 2 years old (as of January 1, of the year he is bred to a mare) in order for the foal to be registered? Or is it his true 2 year old birthday? Or is it even older than that, like 3 or something?

I'm thinking that age still does not matter for AMHA at all. Is that still correct?

In other words, if a stallion was a yearling, 2 year old, 3 year old etc for AMHA, the foal would still be allowed to be registered so long as the stallion report was there?

Thanks to anyone for clearing these questions up for me :)

With AMHR a stallion must be brought permanent (age 3) before you can register any offspring. Therefore, if he happens to cover a mare when he's a yearling, resulting in a foal, that foal cannot be registered.

With AMHA, a stallion can cover mares at any age and the offspring can be registered. However, once it is his 5th year, he must be brought permanent before any foals from that season can be registered.

Oh okay! Thank you so much Jean,

So if a foal resulted from a yearling stallion covering a mare...... if that foal was registered AMHA, then it could be brought into AMHR based on its AMHA papers, for the $400 fee plus registation fee, correct?

Thanks!

Yup, that's right.

And what if the stallion covered a mare when he was 2 (Jan 1 year type thing), and the mare foaled before the stallion turned 3 (actual birthday). Couldn't you just wait to register the foal(with the correct birthdate etc.) until AFTER the stallion's actual 3rd birthday?? So this rule basically, revolves around the stallion's ACTUAL birthdate, and not the Jan 1 birthdate?

Initially the stallion had to be made permanent before the foals could be registered (and yes, as long as the foal was born after Jan. 1st of the stallion's 3 year old year that foal could be registered) but I thought the latest word was that rule had been relaxed, so that the foals can be registered even if the sire isn't yet made permanent provided:

1) that the foal is born after Jan. 1st of the sire's 3 year old year and

2) that the stallion's papers are still 'current'--that is, still temporary but before Dec. 31st of the sire's 3 year old year. Once the temp papers are expired the stallion must be made permanent before the foal can be registered.

Last year when I asked at AMHR about the stallion's age, I was told that the stallion had to be 3 (actual birthday) before a foal could be registered. So if foal was born March 1 and stallion didn't turn three until May 1, the foal's registration would have to wait until May. I enquired about what if the stallion was only a yearling or two year old and they said that the foal could be still be registered but would have to wait until the stallion was three. (foal born May/07, stallion turns three April/09 the foal could be registered in April 2009). So there are kind of provisions for those accidental breedings but not everyone would want to wait that long to register a horse. Of course, the rules could have changed by now.

OK, thank you. This was what I was curious about. It's good to know that at least they can be registered, even if it mean a little longer wait.

I got my papers back all righ without the stallions paperwork being permanent yet.

As long as the stallion will be 3 this year, is what I was informed.

I am sending the stallions papers in this week (they were to harry and dirty to take pictures in the early spring) I got their foals paperwork back last month all right.

So you do not have to wait to mail in the foals paperwork.
