Hey there,

I was wondering if anyone could shed a little light on what it would be like to live in Kansas. Bill and I have a place in Florida we will be moving to, but he'd also like to buy a place in Kansas near where his mom and aunts, uncles and brother lives. They live north of Salina in a town called Glasco(sp) I was wondering what the weather is like (winter temps, length and snow? and summer weather too?) also what does hay costs, and are there any shows around that wouldn't take more than 8hrs to travel to? Any info would sure be appreciated as I am JUST a little worried :new_shocked:

We went to visit two years ago and it's really pretty where they live, but it's 18mile to get gas or a bottle of milk :new_shocked: I'm a country girl but

Guess we'll spend time between the two places

I was born and raised in Kansas. My sister lives in Salina.

waconda valley---Peg Balthazor on the forum is from Glen Elder which is up farther towards Nebraska.

Give her a PM and I am sure she can give you info on horse shows, etc.

The weather defintely has all four seasons. Snow fall depends on the year. Last couple of years have been lighter and warmer. More snow falls in southern Kansas area. But tornadoes are not unusual. Summers are HOT. But now that I live in wash. state, any weather over 80 seems hot to me! Salina always has something going on at the fairgrounds. Rodeos, horse shows, sales, etc. Lots of good lakes to fish and water ski.

Concordia is another town close to Glascow, well not Too far.

I'm not in Kansas but can shed some light on the show scene.)

The Area VI Club holds a show the second weekend in June at Denison, IA. ASPC/AMHR and 4 judges. They also have a show planned this year for August in Grand Island, NE. (www.area6club.info)

The Great Plains Small Equine Assn. based out of Nebraska hosts a 4 judge ASPC/AMHR show the weekend every year in Lincoln, NE. This year the dates are July 14-15 (I heard they may have some classes on the 13th this year also but don't know for sure yet).

It may be a little over 8 hours but the MCSBA also hosts a 3 judge ASPC/AMHR show Memorial Day weekend in Waterloo, IA. (www.classicshetlands.info)

We have some good friends that live in Hays, Kansas and the main thing I always hear them talk about as far as weather goes is the wind. It can be about the same temperature it is here in Alabama but you have to factor in the 10-25 mph winds with it. They really like it there.

Good luck with your decision.

Hey there!!!!!!! I live about an hour west of Salina!!!!

Well I hope you like wind..........I hate the KS wind, but hear it is bad everywhere so maybe it isn't just KS.......lately I haven't had anything nice to say about our weather, with snow, and rain, and last year we where in a HUGE drought.........

But we have to be thankful for any moisture we get, other wise the hay is hard to locate and if you find it you better buy it, because if you don't someone else will.......(thanks to the drought) But I think this year is already looking better.

:saludando:

Thanks all!!

Sounds like at least I'll still be able to show!!

I thought it was really pretty last time we visited

Hello,

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier been, busy at horse shows. I live in Glen Elder, KS which is 20 miles straight west of Glasco. My sister and brother in law live in Glasco. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the area. There is a great equine vet 10 miles from Glasco.

I am the President of the Heartland Miniature Horse Club and we put on 2 AMHA shows a year in Kansas and the Central Regionals are 4 hours away this year. We also travel to OK for shows and Worlds is a 9 hour drive.

Please move here! It would be great to have more miniature horse people around. Peg Balthazor

Peg, Hi!!

I just got a chance to check back on the board!! How awsome! It will be so nice to have someone close!! Do you guys have meetings around where you live? or do you have to travel a long ways? I'd love to get involved if we move there.

Bill's mom and brother, aunts and uncles live in and around Glasco. We are looking for a house with 5-10 acres to be able to keep the beasties. I guess alittle smaller acreage would do too. If you should by chance come across anything like that, that is not too expensive, let me kow would you please.

Could you please tell me how expensive is hay out that wayfor 2-3 wire bales? Is it hard to come by? Great to know about the vet! What is his/her name? Love to hear there are shows close by!! Everything from where we live now takes hours at the very least 4-5 hrs. Most 7-8hrs.

If you do happen to find a place out your way, would you please PM me with a phone number? We'd sure appreciate it. Bill's brother has been looking but the two places he came up with have already sold (the past week, still had the signs up

Sure hope to get to meet you sometime soon :bgrin

Thanks!
