A lot of you have been around long enough to remember July 2003 when my yearling show filly, Triple H Buckin Khaki, had colic surgery. She was just under one year old. She was purchased to be a show filly for me (as well as a pet of course). She went to one show (Grand Champion Junior Mare) and less than a month later, she was almost dead (and then what would I want with her big old show ribbon if I couldn't still have her???).

She came home to my house straight from the hospital on July 31, 2003. She'd never even been at my house before. She'd gone from her breeders straight to the person who trained for me at that time.

When Khaki was in the hospital, they did immediate colic surgery for impaction, but a day or two later, they had to open her up again! I nearly lost it when the surgeon called to tell me she was going in for more surgery. There's some part in minis that they normally do not empty as they would in big horses, but in Khaki's case, it should have been done for her (this isn't the surgeon's fault, in MOST minis what they did was what they should have done).

I was devastated. I felt like the second proceedure just wiped out what good we did to get her into surgery SO quickly. Probably it just goes to show that I have been pretty lucky so far in life because at the time, her having to have colic surgery felt like the worst thing that ever happened to "me" (Khaki says it ranked right up there for her, too!). I was a mess and crying for days. I really stayed in bed for several days other than to run out and check if she was okay. H took off work, too. It was just very scary.

It was a year before I stopped expecting to find her with colic again. I really thought she'd not make it long term for the first year. Then it was two years before I started to think of her as "a regular horse". She's been home from surgery for three (3) years now with NO episodes. My vets have told me many times, as has the surgeon, to "use" her like I would any other horse which includes driving, showing and breeding.

Next spring, I will breed her to DunIT

I'm very thankful that she's had such a wonderful recovery!

Wanted to show you all how she looks today. She's too fat, I know, but she's one happy little mare. I have not taken any posed pictures of her in so long. She could stand a bath and a dye job but that's not going to happen any time soon.

Thanks for looking. You all that were here back when she had the surgeries really did help me get through it and I won't ever forget how supportive the forum was for me.

NO WAY that was 2003--I remember it so well!! (Short term memory is apparently the first to go as my kids so willingly point out)

She looks great. Can't wait to see that cross!

She's a beautiful girl Jill! I remember her rough time. It brought back too many of our own memories. She looks happy and very healthy.

I DO remember this very well, and I could feel your uncertainty and despair/trepidation.

However, she is looking awesome and I think of her often and so glad she has done fine for you.

:D

She reminds me quite a bit of the mare in my avatar's dam, Sami, though that mare was a pinto w/appy characteristics, her base coat was buckskin and they have similar builds.

Thanks for sharing her success story with us, it is all kudos to you and her doctors.

She sure looks great now. Too bad she had to go thru so much. There are miracles to be had and she is one of them.

It just goes to show what good care will do for a horse! She's looking great, Jill.

She's such a pretty girl! I love that second pic...she reminds me of a little school girl with her brown knee socks and her hair slicked and combed back. :bgrin

wOW, Has it been three years already??!!

She looks wonderful

I wasn't a mini owner in 2003 so I don't remember your filly's story, but I can certainly relate. The big horse in my avatar has also had 2 colic surgeries - in 1998 and 2001 - which removed half of his small intestines, which had died. The surgeons gave him little hope after the second surgery because so much tissue was involved. Since his second surgery he has been shown many, many times, completing his Pinto Amateur Championship. He was in the Pinto Breed Demo at the Massachusetts Equine Affaire last year. He is 20 now and semi-retired, although a lot of that has to do with having 6 minis! So there is life after colic surgery for the lucky ones. By the way, his 2 surgeries affected different sections of his intestines and no cause was ever determined for either one.

I wish you well with your girl!! She looks great.

Yes! I remember her too. I am so glad she is doing well, and good to see her looking so good! She doesn't need a die job, she looks great!

I cannot wait for her foal either, this is quite a family we have here.

Wow Jill, She's matured so nicely, she looks like a little sweetheart! I can tell how loved she is, just by looking at her and I'll bet, she knows it too.

I remember it all Jill! I agree with Dr Pam in that it doesn't seem that long ago (time flys!) I remember how when you got her home and you went to see her in your work clothes and she freaked because you had on a skirt.

Your girl looks really GOOD!

: You can see that she KNOWS she is loved.

Jill,

I also remember how worried all of us on the forum were about Khaki. She had a lot of people praying for her. She is certainly a gorgeous little mare.

Someday she will be a great broodmare and it will be fun to see Khaki enjoying motherhood.

Hugs to Khaki and a special hug from her little namesake "Khaki Kisses" I hope my Khaki turns into a beautiful mare just like her.

Thanks, everyone. I am happy Khaki got to stick around, that's for sure.

To put it into a little perspective, THIS is how she looked on August 1, 2003 when she'd been home for about a day
