Does anyone notice different "personalies" in the different colors of Labs? Just curious

My boyfriend will tell you yes, but I haven't noticed too much of a difference. He says that chocolates are not as easy to train and can be more stubborn. He prefers yellows. He claims they are more intelligent and obedient. I don't care, but then I am not the one using them for hunting, they are just good old family dogs to me!!!!

I've owned many Labs and have never noticed a difference due to color alone. Some will say there is.

I have seen any and all be from one extreme to the other. We have always had labs, usually black as that is what we prefer.

Rather than color it seems breeding is the ticket. The American bred labs that are taller and slimmer are a bit more hyper and excitable, usually preferred for hunting.

The english bred, shorter, stockier with the big block heads are calmer. These tend to make a better pet sooner. We have always had this style, and the breeders we got them from have used them for hunting very successfully.

They all are great dogs just some of the breedings take a bit longer to calm down and be able to listen.

I totally agree as far as the breeding goes. I would never own an American Lab, only the English are what I consider the true Labrador Retriever!

They are what you see when you watch the dog shows on TV, conformation at least. Hunting trials are different I guess.

Mine is yellow, Luna is 14 plus and has been a true soul mate for all these years. She only had one litter of pups as it was hard for me to find the male we felt was true English and would pass on the traits we wanted.

And pass it on they did. He son is larger but in a picture one can't tell the difference in her and her puppies, grown.

She had the extreme love of water the come with and natural retriever instincts...babysat all our grand kids and kept them safe in and out of the water..she took to any training immediately and was the sweetest gentlest dog ever,,

Luna is not well now and her time is not far off. We will miss her as we would a child!

I figure it is sort of like the horse colors having different personalities/abilities

We have all three colors. The black is the most 'high strung', choc a little more mellow, and the yellow is the most laid back. We have them just as pets, not hunting so can't speak to that.

The little one is a "rare mini lab".

I don't own any labs, my dogs are 3 golden retrievers but I have a black lab in the kennel right now for training, he does come from a conformation line but he has lots of retrieving desire and has attained 4 field titles this year so he is no dummy and he is a very lovable boy. I haven't trained any chocolate labs but have trained some yellows and I don't notice any difference in ability between the colours, it is the breeding that makes the difference as some other posters said. Having said that I would have any breed in the sporting group, they have good temperaments and have the willingness to please that I like combined with the hunting desire and both my husband and I hunt upland and waterfowl.

I purposely chose the American Lab because the taller and leaner build helps them run farther. at the time I was spending alot more time on horseback and the blockier dogs were pooped at the end of the day. I havent seen an attitude differance in color. I really like the american version as they are more like the Springers I grew up with.[ lots of energy.] DR.

thanks matt for the link...interesting...what they call the "foundation" dog of modern labs looks like an american lab in the face (not blocky head) and a newfoundland body. I would of thought the head would of been more blocky like the english version. I have the amerian version...black...he is high energy to say the least, even at 11 years old and health issues. I never heard of different personalities through color, just breeding...I know my black lab likes to bark ALOT! He will look at you and bark for no reason whatsoever. And you can't keep him out of the water at all, even mudpuddles! He just loves it!

We've only had two labs over the years..........The black, "Blake" was a big "newfoundland" type and just a big loving dufus. Miss him tons........

The yellow is "Shed" who was a rescue and has chosen me as his person. He is very mellow and very much a ladies dog, probably because he had been hit by a man.........He's also a smaller build than Blake.

Blake was the type who didn't know how big he was. He loved the water, loved the mud, loved the cold outdoors. He also loved EVERYBODY.

Shed is much more quiet and reserved. He loves.....but carefully. He sticks close to home and to me. He doesn't like to get dirty or cold, but will come romping with me up in the hay field during irrigation time.

I just think a lot of it has to do with individual personality.

LOL sorry as a Canadian I had to laugh at your post Matt...not saying that im laughing at you or anything I just thought it was cute!

I have had labs all my life, currently we have a 1 year old black female, all were used for hunting, All are also the true canadian labs or english ones people would say. Although Chica has turned out to be a bit taller than usual lol!

I find there is a personality diff. btw. the colors. I find the Blacks and Yellows similar in temperment but the Chocolates OH MY!!! I find that they are always full of beans!! not a bad thing, but always going, they are like energizer bunnies that never stop!

Cheers

Masako
