Jill---I wish I would have found your silver dapple appy mare. I have one who is the same color/pattern-(B size)-who I'm trying to find a match for a driving team.
Hi, Courtney --

Spirit, my silver leopard appy, spent 18mos in training with my former trainer but could not ever get in the cart. Personally, I really feel something else may have been at play. However, I couldn't represent Spirit as having driving potential. If she'd gotten in the cart, I'd have kept her. As it happened though, she went to a pet home where she is a "goddess"! And of course Spirit is about 33"...

And selling Spirit made room for a mare bred by Little Wee who couldn't be any sweeter or level headed. And, she's five generations of appy horses top and bottom MOST of whom are/were leopard. Maybe Klassy x DunIT (appy dam and some characteristics) will give us something colorful?

I DID see a 1/2 sister to Spirit for sale about 1 year ago and she was B sized and fairly young. Colorwise, she's her twin, but I do not remember who had her for sale nor do I remember her full name. She's by the same sire, S S Special Request.

When I was trying to breed Appys I bred my black blanketed Appy stallion BURSIDES BELIZAIRE(sire was a leopard)to a blk roan appy mare 5 times 1 blanketed blk colt 1 roany appy filly &3 solid blacks.Figure that out!My odds for color are much better now with the homozygous pintos.

Here are our leopard boys.

Thanks for the info. Jill! Maybe I can find her sister.

Dawn--your horses are beautiful---goodluck at the World and Nationals!

The one time that I did bred my near leopard appy mare--to a blk/wht pinto with appy frosting (he also happened to be a grandson of Yellow Diamond Little Feather) I got

: -----(drum roll)--A SOLID Black filly  ! So...that was why I bought a leopard colt this year :bgrin ! Good excuse for buying another EXPENSIVE horse right?

I agree its the color that people are so willing to pay for. I sold a red leopard appy, 33" I listed him and he was sold within 2 hours. Last year I had a black leopard appy, 34" , listed him, and within 1/2 hour he was sold. Both were AMHA/AMHR Both of them were sold for $1,000.00 each. and both had very good bloodlines. They are around in our area, you just have to look. I do believe the black leopard is standing at stud and is within a 2 hr drive from me. I do have my dunaloosa but hes not for sale. I could check for you if you would like...email me. Corinne

Hi Geri

Have you looked at Dawns horses?

Hi I think I have the Mare Jill is referring to, a half sister same sire. She is a pintaloosa but looks more appy. Actually I had her she is sold. Here she is with her 06 foal that we bred and foaled out before she went to her new home

She is an excellent color producer.

Like most have said we get at least 3 loud appy colts for each colored girl and thats if we are lucky. But this year we did get very very lucky. We got this black leopard beauty. She is pictured new but is shedding out a black leopard, very loud. But then look at her mom.

Then when we got ANOTHER beautiful black leoparding out filly, we are so thrilled.

There was also another lookalike blk appy filly that was a surprise but she was premature and didnt make it even with round the clock vet care. But she was a beauty and we loved her.

Of course we didnt do too bad in the appy boy department this year either. Jolene another pintaloosa gave us this nice refined pintaloosa colt.

And Firewater outdid herself with this buckskin leopard appy colt with big blue eyes.

All these foals above except Talkers are sired by our Orion SON, Brewers Orion Slate who is solid black. He may not have contributed much to their appy color but they all have tiny muzzles on beautiful little heads so we are getting closer to our goal of the loud appys with good conformation and beautiful heads thanks in large part to Slate. Its definitly an ongoing process!

Besides these appy foals we had 2 other nice ones colored at birth and several that we expect will color up with time, all in all its been a very good year!

This is our latest app foal. T Bar T Brave's Wild Fire :aktion033:

No, I remember your mare but she's not the one I'm thinking of. Actually this mare you posted looks more like my bay leoard "new" mare.

I'm going to the AMHR studbook to see if the name will jump out at me. This mare was owned by a farm who had pasture pictures of her and she was very grey/silver colored on her body so much like the mare I sold. I even emailed with them about maybe buying her so this would have been 18mos or longer ago (for me to have been interested in her).

Shoot... none of the AMHR foals listed by S S Special Request have names that make me think "that's her"... I want to say the farm that had her was in AL, but that could be way off. My memory is good, it's just short!

The color is less common in females than males... and to get a true few spot, you must have leopard in the parentage...

Thank you so much for all the nice words about our horses!

Yes, our avatar horse, Dawgpatch Appy Go Lucky, is the son of SS Special Request. He is full brother to a stud that is at Mini Brook. Here he is with one of his best friends:

Here's his leopard filly for 2006, Little Wee Casino Royale, with her mom Little Wee Vegas Lights, a leopard:

Jill's mare, Klassy, is the daughter of Little Wee Bandito's Magical Merlin

And here's Merlin's 2006 leopard colt, Little Wee Phoenix Rising, who had no interest in staying still to have his naval treated! Mom is Little Wee Ghost Dancer, also a leopard. So, Jill, this is Klassy's baby brother.

Also would like to say: The apps on this post are breathtaking! Congrats to all who have bred them!

It's a small world world after all, it's a small world after all...

The stallion Little Wee just posted is a 1/2 brother to my sold mare Spirit that was discussed as a possible match for a driving pair and he's a 1/2 brother to the B mare that looks just like her in color.

And, I gotta post my spotted girl that was bred by Little Wee. I just love this mare. She is built like I love and she is soooooooo loudly marked. On the inside, she is truly a gem -- very, very loving:

I haven't read every post so I am not sure if I am reposting anything.

In my opinion a horse's color should not effect the price. Yes, leopard appys are rare, but it really should be all about conformation, bloodlines, and personality.

Yes, all of those things! But some of us like to add a little icing on the cake. Those points mentioned must be present, but then we have the choice of where we go with color or pattern or both. And we can offer that to others, if we're lucky. They say to breed what you like ...........you can tell where I fall on that one! We breed for conformation and disposition. Bloodlines are an integral part of our program. Color and patterns are bonuses! Solid foundations are essential, but we like to produce that little extra too. :bgrin

Hello Group!

I have thoroughly enjoyed looking at all your wonderful leopard appys! There are some beautiful horses out there! Thank you so much for sharing! I don't know what the facination is, but for the last 3 years or so, even before the thought of getting into minis came about, I've wanted a leopard appy. When we started buying minis, I told my husband I would stop when I found my leopard. Well, I guess it's time to stop! I found my leopard appy! :new_multi: :new_multi: :new_multi: Normally, I would NEVER buy without visiting them in person first, but in this case I did since this one is out of my state. He is a weanling colt, and should be coming home within the next month. I wanted an adult, but realized in order to afford one, it was going to have to be young.

I was just so excited about this one, I couldn't wait to share! We're not into showing, so I don't even care if he is show quality or not. He's very loud, and I'm hoping he's going to someday be a wonderful cart horse for me! I just can't wait to get this one home! :488:

I just wanted to say that I agree about conformation and personality being at the top of my list also.

But I do not place bloodlines above most other things if I like a horse.

If I love the color on a horse with beautiful conformation and a disposition I love, but from unknown or "non famous" bloodlines, I'd take that horse in a heartbeat over one with great conformation and disposition and well known bloodlines ....... but a color I did not particularly like.

But then I breed for what "I " like to see every day in my pasture and barn :). I also love to find or produce a "diamond in the rough" from relatively unknown background :)

And I love a whole rainbow of loud and/or beautiful colors and am proud of my colorful herd! :)

Susan O.

I would agree- conformation and disposition is first- great movement is a must. The color is just an added plus, if you get those things FIRST.

As mentioned early on in this thread, Susan (susanminiponygirl) from Wellspring Farm in Brooksville sold this lovely colt to me WAY more than reasonably. And I certainly agree with the post about conformation first, color second because I don't breed for, nor own any other appaloosas. This boy could have been pink with purple polka dots, and I still would have liked him enough to purchase him! This is Wellspring's Drum Roll Please, a Mountain High White Cloud's son.

Thanks again, Susan and Dick....Baby Bentley and I are looking forward to getting him home soon (and out of your hair!)

This has been a fun post to read and especially to see pictures of the little appys! I had to laugh, a person at the Iowa State Fair made the comment that some day the appys will come back in style. I asked her if she had seen the recent Journal or World. She replied no she hadn't. Personally I think that "day" is closer than she thinks!
