Ground driving and winter minis!

Love em!!! its looks like around here to we got about 4 inches of snow today and if the wind and snow keep up tonight, probably even more tomorrow. The minis stayed out in it all day and played. I love Chloe and the one of the whole herd in the barn. Gorgeous pictures.

Thanks for the replies--gosh it's slow over here. Doesn't anyone like to talk about photos? Or at least reply?

I love seeing everyone in their "fuzzies"! And I cannot wait until my girls are old enough to start their driving lessons. I've got a fair amount of time to wait though as Izzy will only be two in late May and the two younger girls will be yearlings this spring. Our 10 yr old is not suited for driving....build wise or temperment wise.

I'll reply to your post Karla!

Those little horses look so adorable in their winter jammies. I have always loved the amount of fuzz the minis get during winter. Even Bailey and Willow get a huge thick coat and we don't even get snow! (well a couple of minor falls throughout winter that melts as soon as it hits the ground).

Ground driving is so much fun isn't it? Im sure the horses enjoy doing it, especially if you can get them out on the roadside. Always something to see and check out.

Do you have plans on hooking any of them up to cart or is the ground driving enough? I noticed that you ground drive in a halter too. That's how I taught Bailey and Willow and they both did great that way. Now I'm teaching Bailey in a bitless bridle as I'd like to stay away from using a bit other than for shows.

I always enjoy your photos Karla.

You can start with the first step--I walk them with a lead on each side of their halter so they get the feel of pressure on both sides. (This is not my idea--everyone suggested it!

) I don't have to do that more than a few walks before they seems to get the idea.

I have a now 3 year old who doesn't have the personality for driving. She thinks she's a puppy (she's the tallest one I have). She wants to be by my side as often as possible, so walking out in front of me is just not going to work. I was thinking about her this week--as she's been following me everywhere--like she has a halter and lead on--and I remember she did this from the time she was born. She followed me more than any other foal born here. I added voice cues when she was only a few months old, and it looked as if she was very well trained.

No plans for a cart or harness. I love the exercise!! I'm going to be 5-0 this year and I need all the walking I can get so I don't rust.

I'm scared of tipping a cart--I don't want to get hurt--and don't want a horse to get hurt. If I had a driving buddy close by, I might reconsider, but it's nothing I'll do on my own. I will set of obstacle courses for them and go all around the lanes--the 2 mile trail. They have to get used to having a woods on one side and a corn field on the other--not easy for some. I think my mares will handle it great though. I just started them--Jazz was further along--but he's at a new home now.

I have a bit for Gypsy, but she's not ready yet. Chloe's should be on the way soon. I use a French link snaffle. My farrier mentioned mini folks he knows going with bitless, and I'd love to learn more about that. Where are they sold??

Thanks for the replies.
