Tate would have been 17 in October. This protector only weighing 12 pounds, watched out for me up to the very end. He took care of me, watched out for me since the day he came into our home, and his passing was no different. Tate's health had been failing rapidly over the past week, it just doesn't take long at this age. While at the vet yesterday, I decided to take him home, spend one last night with him, and take him back this morning to let him cross over. Even in his condition he still continued to watch over me. I'm sure knowing how very difficult it all had been for me, he didn't want me to make that decision, Tate passed away at midnight quietly in his sleep.
We came home yesterday, wrapped him in his favorite blanket, sat in his corner of the couch, and talked about all he had done.
There will never be a better friend. For over 16 years, each and every day, he has waited at the door for me until I came home, something he did even when I was gone several days. He has traveled many places with me and loved his rides in the truck. Still protecting me, as he would always go after the toll people when they reached into the truck to accept my toll fee. Tate told me when my son had a bike wreck, when Prints foaled 5 years ago, he let me know every single time someone was at my house, he took unknown abuse when he went after the guys who broke into our house last May, and on and on. There is no doubt he did more for me than would ever be expected. But packed into that little 12 pound chi-mix body, was an 11 pound heart of gold.
I am not sure how I was so very blessed to come to have 16 years with a very, very special friend. But as I wonder how I will get through the day without him, how I will sleep without him lying on my ankles, I do know I am extremely grateful for having the opportunity of being on the receiving end of his commitment, dedication, loyality, and love.
