Thanks everyone.

Cherish was one of my favorites. She came to me so very skittish. It has taken lots of patience and work to get her to trust me. She wouldn't even let me touch her at first even when caught and tied. But had finally gotten to the point where I could just walk up to her in the field and pet her all over. Now this. I feel like she was just getting to be happy and relaxed in life.

Carin, I can definitely see what you mean about maybe the gut being twisted and then relaxing enough to untwist. She was rolling pretty violently when I first saw her on Tuesday morning. Just dropping like her legs were giving out on her. But after I gave her the banamine she seemed to relax and rest and wanted to eat again.

Another thing I wanted to add was that the vet took a small sample of the intestine that had died to be tested for something. I can't remember what it was. Does this ring any bells with any of you?

I lost a young mare to the exact same thing. My vet told me that the putrid sweet smelll of her breath was the give away. She never colicked really just got more and more depressed. She died before we could help her. So sorry for your loss, no one knows what gets them into these twists and intusseptions, when the bowel telescopes onto itself.

I feel your pain.

Lyn

I'm so sorry for the loss of your mare and her foal. It's a tragedy.

I'm so sorry for your loss - hard enough in an older horse but such a sudden loss in a young mare is a bear. I'm just very sorry....
