My husband found this horrible story in the Toronto Sun today about a mini stallion that was mauled and devoured by a pit bull and a pit bull cross running at large last week near Anola MB. It said the dogs chased the horse in his pen and he didn't stand a chance against them. The names of the horse's owners have not been released, but his name was Cody Cookie. There's a photo of him in the Sun.

The article said that pit bulls have been banned in Winnipeg for 15 years already (!!!!! that shocked me! we just finally got the b%$##@$s banned in Ontario earlier this year), but the community where this attack took place is one of the few rural municipalities that doesn't have a ban on them.

While respecting the privacy of the owners, I'm sure they could use some prayers. The husband said his wife is still having a hard time and she's not doing well. My heart breaks for them.

Meanwhile, they're holding those ^%$@#@#% dogs to make sure they're not rabid. Who cares if they're rabid????? They need to be destroyed. Right now!!

I agree that the dogs should be put down, regardless of what breed they are. Frankly, if they had been Toy Poodles and been running free and killing like that, they should be euthanized.

Even more importantly, WHERE ARE THE OWNERS? They should be held accountable.

How awful; I haven't been keeping up with any news at all the last little while so hadn't heard anything about this.

I do hope these dogs get euthanized so that they never have another chance to attack anything.

I am cross-posting this from the regular forum:

That is a HORRIBLE situation & my sympathy goes to the owner of the horse...how tragic. And my hatred goes to the simpletons who let their dogs roam loose.....no matter if they are poodles or pit bulls. PLEASE, you folks, please realize it's the DEED not the BREED!! The it's the people, not the pits that are at fault.

We have had Am Staffs EXCLUSIVELY for 15 years. Don't want any other breed for temperment, intelligence & just plain fun. They are wonderful with the horses. Absolutely wonderful. But they have to be trained to respect horses, just like any other breed would, if the owner has any sense. Dogs running lose = disaster.

Bully breeds are highly intelligent. It's too bad many people with NO BRAINS own them & have no idea what they have. You can tell I'm a "bit" predjudiced but I'm so tired of defending them & I hate it when they come off as bad because of their breed. No, I'm sorry it's the idiots that think they are smart enough to own them, when they're not the dog for everyone. And everyone isn't the right owner for the breeds.

But then, Labs or whatever can get the pack mentality when running loose. And many times, it's not EVEN pits, but they are called that by people who don't know any better either. Shame shame shame. About the horse & about the perception of the breed.

It's the DEED not the BREED! I don't mean, in any way, to diminish the loss of the horse, believe me. I just hate to see things that point the finger at the pits as tho they are the only breed who would do such a thing. ALL dogs are capable of it.

Here's pix of my pits doing what they do best........taking care of their minis. These are newborn foals.

Dear Prudence with Little Wee Nik's New Hope, after she had a terrible birth. She was malpositioned & her dam & me had a heck of a time & we both were exhausted. Pru cleaned up the foal, removing the sac.

Ursa Minor with Six Gems Little Wee Warrior's Mystique. By the way, we got her from a shelter when she was about 8 months old & she had never seen or smelled a horse before. She loves them madly.

Sorry, but it's been proven again & again. It's the DEED not the BREED. Sorry also I'm so ferocious about this. Been fighting predjuce for 15 years. Oh, the tales I could tell!

However, alas, I must agree.........the dogs who did that deed should be destroyed. And it's 90% the owners' fault & they won't be killed. Just the dogs. The animals, horses & dogs alike, always pay the price for human stupidity.

That poor baby! The problem is they were running together. Ron had to take the gun out the other day to scare two lab mixes off. I am going to end up catching them and then call the dog warden so their owner gets fined $85 a piece and then maybe she will take things seriously.

Its the DEED not the BREED. Oh howwwww true!!!! Neighbors have a Lab, 2 lab mixes and a minipoodle, another neighbor has a Pit/Lab cross and yet another has a Rhodie. These dogs pack up and chase anything. They have killed calves and at least one cow ( in delivery). Not to mention they are just plain barking nuisances.

Dogs, like horses, are what you allow them to be. My Heelers have killed cats and chickens. But, through some tough love and sore arses now they wont even look at them LOL Oh well, better a sore butt than a dead critter.

Gotta say pooor mini, cant even imagine the fear and terror that little dude went through. Besides euthanizing the dogs, the owners should have some super stiff fines and possibly not be allowed to own any dogs for a few years. If ever again.
