When your mare foals have the EGG test done and if is low you can give plasma. then retest. Don't worry too much about that right now. It is done all the time and your foal will be safe.

I think this strange weather is causing some mares to either foal early or later than the usual foal dates. She is not so late that you would need to worry. It sounds like you could really use some help watching her. Do you have anyone who could watch her while you get some sleep?

Do you have her on a camera? Do you have a beeper?

Mares usually like to be alone when they foal and will wait till everyone is not around. They can stop the labor if they are scared and need to run or get away from something if they are not too far into it at the time.

If you do not have any of these things can you watch her from a little distance so she is not distracted by you being there?

she has a foaling alarm on and i have her on our house camera right now. she is a mare who wants you there when i leave she follows me

how do they give plasma? my daughter and husband offer to watch her but you know when it is your horse you feel you need to be there

someone ask if the foal is still alive yes i just saw it moving.

I think the vets wait around 12 hour before the give the test. It may be sooner, but they want to give it a chance to show up on the reading. If it is low, they can give plasma orally at that time. If 24 hours has past then they will need to do a transfusion. That would be more expensive. i may be a little off on the times, but I wanted to make sure you knew that you will have these options.

I know what you mean about being too nervous to sleep at this time. As you become more sleep deprived you will just stress yourself out even more. I know some people who will even put a cot in the adjoining stall. Maybe that could be an option for you. You could have the family watch the mare and you could be close enough to feel comfortable enough to get some sleep.

12 hours is the right time interval for an IgG test. But mares can drip milk prior to foaling and still have more than enough colostrum when the foal needs it...
