Ok just thought I would ask, I have a mare due anytime now well today I went to put her in her stall and shes got this smell that I thought only mares who come in heat only gets that smell and her bag is huge and her privite parts is very swollen kind of has a pink tint to it shes so heavy in foal she can hardly walk her milk is so sticky like honey. Is this a sign that I should be on my toes shes a maiden.Oh and shes been loseing her mucus plug for 2 weeks now and it has stop so far so I was hopeing someone could tell me if the way she smells has something to do with her going to foal soon. Thanks for the help

In my experience, I have found that some mares do emit an odor similar to a "heat" odor when they are getting close to foaling. It puzzled me at first when I saw it. A mare who had been living full time with a stallion was suddenly being pursued by him as tho she was in heat. She foaled within 48 hours. I removed her from that pasture, of course! I've seen it occassionally, and by no means do all mares do it, but some do.

Then again, I've had mares foal out right with the stallion and no problems at all. Same stallion. Different mare. It's even been different from year to year with the same mare. They keep you guessing!
