Has anyone read Mary Stewart's series about Merlin during King Arther's reign? The first is The Crystal Cave. I read it when it first came out in the 70's and have all in that series. She also wrote a book about a werewolf called A Walk In Wolf Wood. Most of her books are romantic adventure stories; all good reading. She is no longer living.

I've never heard of her but the werewolf one might be something I'd be interested in.

Have you ever watched Wolf with Jack Nichalson? I do not like werewolf movies, but that one has an interesting story. I have to leave the room during the fight at the end, though.

I do not read any of the modern fantasy/wizard books, so do not know how Stewart would compare with them. I like her Merlin books because there was historical background; her husband was a professor of English history at Oxford, so the background was very believable, but she added her own interpretation of events. She was a best seller in her day; goes to show that one can never tell where an author's works will be in 30-40 years...

I have read her books and love them. And I've reread a couple recently again. Her books are timeless and well written.

Wow, that brings back memories! Yes, I read the Merlin series. Loved them and during the years forgot who wrote them. I would love to read them again. I'm going to try amazon or ebay to see if they are still in print. You should nominate them for future books of the month. They are my favorite books of the Arthur period. I haven't read A Walk in Wolf Wood, will need to look for that one also. I took the Merlin series out from the library in the 70's but would be surprised if they still have them.

Just a thought. Maybe we should start a book exchange for those who have the books and those looking for them?

I am not sure our library has them any more either, but maybe you could get them on interlibrary loan. I see Crystal Cave sometimes in used book stores, but rarely the others. The Moon Spinners she wrote was made into a Disney movie.

I just found the series on ebay and ordered it! Can't wait until I can reread this great series. Marsha, thanks for reminding me of these Mary Stewart books, really did enjoy them those many years ago! For some reason I got away from reading her novels, I think I will start her books again. There are probably lots of books I never got to.

There are actually 4 books in the series. The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day.

Now I'm inspired to reread them. They are books I've carried around with me for nearly 40 years; you know the books I mean, the ones you might never read again but they gave you so much reading pleasure that you feel responsible for them! The Crystal Cave is one of the books I wish I could discover again for the first time.

I ordered them but haven't gotten them yet, real bummer as I am so looking forward to rereading this series.

I read The Crystal Cave, then read The Hollow Hills; finished it this morning. I feel differently about the genre now than I did so many years ago, but her writing style kept me enthralled just the same as it did then. Do not know if I will read The Last Enchantment right now, though. I remember not liking the end (I like happy endings).
