a girl i know microchippes all of her big horses. does anybody microchip therir minis, is it worth it, does anybody know how much this would cost. I have had it on my mind the last few days and was just wondering if anyone had any imput on this for me?

For the dogs the chips are 9.09 cdn. each and the implanter is free if you are buying 10 or more chips.

This is thru the Canadian Kennel Club and I would imagine they would work for minis since the St Bernard I saw today at the vets was bigger than my weanlings by a lot

I microchip all my animals, dogs cats, birds and horses ( big and small) I do it myself excepot the horses since the placement is DEEP and I'd rather blame my vet if something goes wrong!

As I understand it, a slaughter house cannot kill a horse with a microchip unless the animal arrives with a signed letter stating it is OK to do so..............I do not know if this is the law in every state but have heard it is in the Northeast ( Canada too).

I also have YELLOW signs posted in the barn that all the animals are done, and on all my show crates for the dogs.

I buy my own (at $18.00 each, used to be $12.00) by the case, and register them all with Home Again ( the AKC) who takes all animals.

Yep, the farm I bought Bailey from microchips all their horses.

Hot farm branding is popular over here in Australia, but it leaves a BIG ugly scar on their shoulder. I'd choose micro chipping any day.

Bailey can be traced quite easily through the microchip registry.

Not sure of the cost here, I didn't pay for it.

Actually, you can't show here in miniature shows unless your horses are branded or micro chipped! ( I think)

All our horses and dogs are chipped. We do it ourselves.

We microchip at the Vet Clinic I manage, please make sure that you get one of the top brands of microchip, because some come out a different signal strength than the comman scanners will read, meaning your chip will not be picked up even if it is scanned. Although I highly recommend chips, they are only as good as the person reading them, which means unless you have someone scanning the animal it doesnt matter if you have them chipped or not.

My 3 mini stallions are microchipped. Done a few years back.

It costs $25 US including shipping to order from Avid Microchips, plus $15 to register in the privately run chip database.

Both my horses are chipped; my QH came from LA where its state law.

I'd definately insist upon a vet doing the work, although it is possible for a skilled tech to do it themselves.
