OK, apparantely this has been going on since 2006 but I was unaware of it. Microsoft quit publishing FrontPage, or so this is the story I get from my host server. I have been trying to update my site for a couple months and having no success but since I have been so busy with shows, nationals, year end banquets, conventions, etc. I have not had time to fiddle with it and find out why I am having difficulty.

Well, day before yesterday I decided it was time to get to the bottom of this. It appears that when my host upgraded (July) they no longer are going to support FrontPage files and in order to manage my site with FrontPage I need a FTP program, which they sent me at no charge, it is called Smart FTP.

Well, I am glad the program is smart because I apparantely am dumber than a box of rocks. I cannot access my files on my computer. Even if I could, I could not publish anything as I cannot convert the d@*n files to ftp. I cannot even get what I am sure is a good back up of my website so I can convert it.

I am so flipping mad right now. Never a notice from my host that they were going to do this. Had I known I would have not renewed just a month ago for the next year at over 150 a year. I know there are cheaper but I have always been happy with them.

Anybody have any suggestions for me or help to offer this obviously not so savvy web master?

Oh I use OneWebHosting.com

Aw Dang, Annette! That is a total bummer.

Your site is beautiful, so you aren't doing so bad!

I will try to help you if you want to give me a call.

Hi Annette,

What browser are you using (ex. Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.)?

It sounds like your website is still working (haven't actually been there yet), so that is good tells me that FP doesn't add in code that will only work if from it or something. I don't know anything about that external FTP client, I don't personally use an external FTP client, I just use Internet Explorer (I'm using v.6, not the latest which is 7 but it should work the same).

If you're using or can use Internet Explorer try this, once you've updated the files you want updated in FP and saved them.

1. First, you need to find out where your files are on your computer. If you don't know off hand you may have to open FP, and open some page of your website and go to the File > Save As command and look where the file is. You can see this by looking in the "Look In" drop down box at the top. You shoiuld be able to map its path that way. It could look something like Drive C > Program Files > Microsoft Page > Site 1.

2. Once you figure out the path of your files, what folder they're in, go to My Computer which may either be on your desktop or right inside the start menu. From there start following the path to your files. If they're in C, open the Drive C folder, if they're in program files next open that folder, etc. until you have open the folder that you can see all your HTML files.

3. Now leave that window open, and go to start or wherever to open Internet Explorer. When it opens, go to the address bar and type in ftp://www.YourDomain.com (type your real domain). For example, for my site I would type in ftp://www.aplexus.com.

4. After you type in the address a box should pop up that says enter your user name and password. You need to enter the information that gets you into your host. Sometimes the user name may be your domain.com and sometimes its other things. It'd be whatever the UN and Password is that you use everytime you update your site.

4b. If the box does not pop up, but gives you an error saying you don't have permission to access it click ok and then try going to File > Login As... The box should then pop up and you can enter your login info as described above.

4c. If the login box still will not pop up then you need to check your internet options in IE and make sure you have FTP enabled. You can do this by going to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced in IE and scrolling through the list.

5. Now that your logged in, if you don't see your files right then, there should be some folders. I can't tell you what they'll be named because every host does it differently. Mine has a html folder listed, I've also seen htdocs, and several other things. You need to click on some folder and try to find where you're files are. You should recognize them when you find them. You might have called them stallions.html or page1.html, etc. I can tell you it will not be in a cgi-bin folder. Once you get in a folder, if you don't see your files use your back button on your keyboard or in your browser to get back to the view of all folders.

6. Now that you've located your files on your computer and at your FTP site, I find it easiest to have my FTP site window maximized to take up the screen. Then on the taskbar I click the window where my file on my computer and that screen should NOT be maximized, you can make it smaller than the other one by clicking the double square button by the X in the upper right corner of the window and/or use your mouse to drag the sides of the window in to make it smaller so you can see some of the FTP window behind it.

7. In the My Computer view, where the files are on your computer, highlight the files that you'd like to update on your website. If you want to update more than one you can use the mouse and shift key to select the files. So lets say you have forsale, stallions, and mares highlighted. Now, holding down the left mouse button over one of the highlighted files, drag your mouse to a white, blank portion of the FTP window. Your My Computer view window should disappear once you release the mouse button in that blank area of the FTP window.

8. If the forsale page, for example, is a file that is already on your website a box will appear that says 'do you want to replace this file?' You should click Yes. I usually click 'Yes to All' since I'm usually updating several files at a time.

Once the progress box disappears you're done! You've updated your website via FTP. Now you just need to go to the address bar and type in your web address http://www.yourdomain.com and check out the pages you updated. If the changes don't seem to be showing up, make sure you've tried hitting refresh.

If you can't use IE, well then I hope someone else can use all that that I typed out
