Ok, I'm Irish and I didn't wear green so punish me will you? Anyway, We did chores this morning and spent the rest of the day moving a friends. Some you you may remember the post about the mare I didn't think was expecting was shedding early. Well, when we got home to do chores tonight, she was in her run in and wouldn't come out. I immediately thought she had foaled... I didn't think she was in foal, but the shedding thread had me thinking. Anyway, she came out to greet me. I checked her bag nothing. I patted her flank area and she really flinched. when I peeked into the shed I found him. He was cold and still attached to the placenta. She was at 281 and has had one live foal. I am sick as all get out! I am curious however to know what you all think so I am posting pictures of my little bay colt to see what you think could be the problem. Could it have been red bag with the placenta still attached? Tell me what you think. I'm having a crappy st. Patty day! Thanks for letting me dump on you and if you have any ideas on what happened here...I should have been here is all I can say!

Edited to add: Mindy is so heart broken. I wish I could do something for her. I am so sick and angry at myself! Who would have thought. He looks perfect for being so early! She would have been bread June 9...

Being only 281 days it was more than likely way to early to save him. He definitely looks early to me, the tipped ears and long milk toes tell that story, plus the somewhat wispy coat.

From just the pictures it looks like it may have been a twisted cord, but depending on how much you or the mare moved him it could have gotten twisted that way as well.

I've been through this and it sucks, I'm very sorry for your loss. Give your mare extra hugs.

Oh my goodness, my heart is breaking for you. I'm going through the same thing (Twoie thread) so I'm sending you HUGE (((((HUGS))))))

I am so very sorry. Beautiful colt, he really does LOOK about full term. But something happened. Maybe it was red bag. You can't beat yourself up about it. It will not help!!! We are all human and it stinks to lose one. I am sorry.

 i am so sorry for your loss.

It would have been a nicing looking foal.

you and your mare will be in our prayers

: We never do know why?

So sorry for your loss. So glad he did come out and mom is doing OK.

My heart is absolutely breaking for you, I lost what would have been our very first foal 2 years ago, came home to a dead foal, mare was at 316 days. Your little guy doesn't look very premature to me. Was in in the sac when you found him? I am assuming not so not a redbag delivery I don't think. Like you I beat myself up about it, please don't. Give your mare a big hug for me would you? You are both in my thoughts and prayers for healing.

I am so sorry for your loss. Don't beat yourself up about it. Sounds like he was early. Most of us have been in your shoes before. Hugs and prayers. Sheila

He was out of the sac. Mom has not bagged up at all before or after, so maybe that is enough to say that it wasn't to be...Still crying a river, I haven't lost one before. I guess it was just my turn.

He would have been beautiful and I am so very very sorry for this loss to you both.

Staci, I'm so sorry about the foal. Hope Mindy is doing well soon.

I remember your pics of Mindy and Susie last week......Susie(sorrel mare) was the mare I thought looked bred. It was hard to tell with Mindy...don't beat yourself up over this .......... Take care.

So sorry for your loss. I would say twisted cord. It looks twisted near the colt's body and then straighter towards the placenta to me. We lost one at about the same time last year-twisted cord. The foal twists the cord which cause oxygen to go, which causes the placenta to detach early (what our vet told us). The foal looks to young to be viable to me -don't beat yourself up. You could have been watching her like a hawk (I was staring right at my mare when she lost her foal) and still not have saved the foal.

Please don't beat yourself up over this, some things are beyond our control no matter what we do.

If she was bred on June 9th, then the colt was definitely too early to have survived, and I agree with Suzie, it was probably a twisted umbilical cord (or some similar thing that you have no control over). Very sad, but at least your mare is ok, trying to look on the bright side... Hard to do when your heart is breaking I know. So sorry...

Staci, I'm so sorry too..Glad to hear the mare is well, that's a blessing! ~HUGS~

Oh dear, I am so sorry....please do not beat yourself up over this. I know, I know, easier said than done.

Please know I am thinking of you and sending hugs & prayers your way.
