Hi everyone, I have a 8 year old mini horse Delilah. A couple days ago I discovered she has something going on with her tendon above her hoof. Has anyone had this problem with their mini? I have been putting thermal gel on it and I also ordered a ice therapy boot, I am just wondering if anyone has had this same problem with your mini, if you could give me some advice on what to do. She doesn't really walk around she stays in her stall which I know she needs. If someone could help me out or lead me in the right direction that'd be great :)

I'm not really sure exactly where you mean. Close to the hoof, or up the back of the leg? Minis seem to be less prone to serious injuries than full sized horses, but a tendon injury to me is an emergency vet call. They can ultrasound it and tell you if she needs ice or heat or rest or exercise. or surgery. Some need stall rest until healed, but some need to have a certain amount of exercise to heal correctly.

You are keeping an eye on it which is great so you will notice any swelling. When you lead her, does she walk willingly and normally, that is, without favoring her hoof? Is Delilah normally an active mini, where she walks and plays or is she more laid back? Is staying in her stall unusual?

Over the decades, the minis and I have faced different health difficulties, but never a tendon, so I do not speak from experience here! I do think calling a vet is a practical thing to do as it usually gives you the information needed to help your mini.

yes, delilah is a very active little pony she loves to play with my other pony, that’s why i noticed something wasn’t right about her. she walks when she has too if that makes sense, if she walks she walks extremely slow. Delilah is still her giddy lovey self but just isn’t playing and staying in the stall a lot i am around her 24/7 to make sure she’s okay. my thermal gel does help her with the pain but it obviously still bothers her. staying in her stall isn’t really unusual for her that’s where she feels comfortable the only time she comes out is for water and feed :) but being she’s got some tendon pain she’s in there a lot and out very little

i am really hoping my ice boot i ordered for her helps. this is the first time something like this has happened. she’s always been very healthy.
