With people I ask there seems to be some confusion with this which of course only adds to mine a newbie with ponies trying to learn

Somehow this seems to bring more confusion then other "types"

I have heard a modern is more refinedy, typey , has more action- I have heard that a modern pleasure is just a true modern who doesnt use chains ect but I see very different body types in Modern pleasure from the more heavy bodied pony to the very extreme and refined

What is a modern and what is a modern pleasure to you?

I dont think it has as much (if any) to do with body type ...the moderns/modern pleasures i have seen look exactly alike, only difference in the movement and how they are shown.

Moderns have the EXTREMELY high movement!

Modern Pleasures on the other hand have the same look as the modern but less action as far as movement goes. They (to me atleast) still move somewhat extreme but nothing as high and stylish as the Modern. I dont think MP's are shown with fake tails either but i could be wrong. I also think they are shown more in a way that a classic is shown, w/ a regular show halter and i dont think a tailer is needed? Could be wrong though. I think they work the rail more like a classic as well rather then how the Modern works the rail. But i think they also do show w/ ribbon in the forelock and mane.

Now i am not completely sure but from what i have noticed lol.

To me, like i said, they look the same and act the same (although, i have heard that a MP is a bit more calmer and relaxed ...i do think that depends on the horse). I dont think MP's go all out as much with chains, pads, shoes and weights ..i think its more about natural movement.

I think it states the difference between a modern/modern pleasure. I think MP's can get marked down for having to extreme movement as well but agian, not sure lol. Sorry i couldnt be more help

Hi: I think Leeann's (spelled right?) post is pretty much on the mark. We had a couple of stallions that were shown MP by Jim Curry. There were no fake tails, but the trademark braids of the M's were used and are required. MP don't have to be shod and they should not have the extreme action of the M's. I believe the main difference is the movement, not so much body type, and the fact that M's have that long hoof and weighted shoes + the tailer. Perhaps someone with more knowledge will jump in and add/clarify? Ta, Shirlee

Lisa... the standard of perfection (how the head, body, neck, feet, ect. are to be conformed) is the same for both Modern and Modern Pleasure.

The Rulebook goes on to say this about Modern Pleasure:

Ponies are to be judged on manners, quality and performance, with emphasis in that order.

Ponies to be shown with tail in natural position. Ponies to be judged on an easy, animated but not extreme way of going. The pony should be of superior type, conformation, attitude and training for the specific qualifications of the class.

The Modern Pleasure pony generally has less animation than that of the Roadster or Harness pony and must display an absolutely agreeable attitude. While its gait must be collected and balanced, it need not have the brilliance or high action of the Roadster or harness pony.

It's a gray area between type. That is why it is important for us to show and ask the judges what type of pony we have and how best to fit it for the division we want to show in. Moderns sure take a lot more work than Modern Pleasure!

i have to disagree on body type. modern pleasures imo do not have the extreme body type of the moderns. When I showed patches (who is modern pleasure) in a regular modern class (my friend entered me as a joke) she was not at all in body type what the moderns are. IMO they are more lighter boned and refined.

When we showed her in modern pleasure most of her competition was like her. A little heavier boned with really pretty movement but not the extreme movement of the moderns. These are usually likened to a good kids riding pony aka pleasure horse

Of course this is also where papers come into play. Patches has an outcross to a hackney a couple generations back therefore she is B papered aka modern but because her body type and movement to not fit the modern type shes modern pleasure

different parts of the country could be different
