Okay while i was over at Diana's house today i hooked mom up w/ this site about her book she's reading and she stumbled upon horsetopia.com. Well she found the Haflinger section and when i came back she was starting at this w/ hearts popping out of her eyes and a phone in her hand!

9 yr old broke haflinger gelding. 14hh ....were thinking about getting it since mom is in love w/ it and having me ride it over the winter some (there 18 yr old daughter rode it on weekends when she was home from college and showed him in a driving class a couple times). He is registered and they want $800 for him. Now i know this is the 3'd thread i've posted on this topic but mom liked this guy all by herself you all know the story. Moms a bit heavy and all ...she likes him though and i know haflingers can hold on the ups of 250 pounds from what i read. She picked him out and i have to admit he is a nice color and well built, looks healthy. I just dont really life haflingers but mom seems to like this one ......would she be okay?

Also ..how much do you guys think he weighs? I need to do the whole weight TIMES .22 thing. we need a haflinger around 1100-1,300 ....do you think he is about that? He looks pretty well muscular to me ..i just need your help on guessing his weight bc im no good at it.

Mom has rode about 2 times so far ..she rode Tobys paint last weekend. She didnt have any trouble at all ..of course i was leading but she was doing most the reining. Shes doing great! His paint could hold a house though and his legs are about the size of a tree trunk ..kinda like this one

Welli love the breed they are great little ponies (or small horses whatever) but.. i would have to question why this horse is 800 bucks.. they usually run much more then that so for me that would be a bit of a red flag... doesnt mean he might not be ok but would make me wonder for sure and do a bit of investigating.

I do think for a larger person a little horse like this would be a pretty good breed as a general rule they are stout, quiet, even tempered and easy to get along with but again my biggest issue would be with the price (not that i wouldnt be happy to get one for that price but please take your time to find out WHY) especially if buying over the net and not being able to ride him ect

They wanted 1,000 but mom asked them what the lowest they would take was since they said on the site it was negotiable. They said no less then 800. They are selling a couple of there horses to buy a new horse trailer they said. And since its there daughters horse and shes moving away they put it up for sale. So really 800 is what they wanna get out of it at least.

Anyone guess the weight? really i just need to know that and i can do some mental math (AKA ..calculator)

Why not just ask them what he weighs? The $800 would be a flag to me as well, but surely worth looking into. You stated that these horses can carry 250 , doesnt your mom weigh more than that, then add on the saddle? Just wondering. To be the .22-25% thing he would need to weigh 1200 or so. At least he is a decent age. Looks like a cutie pie too!

Your last post said your mom weighs around 275 you add a 40 pound saddle which a 19 inch western staddle would be and you are looking at a load around 320 or so. Use that for your math. I guess I just have trouble with someone wanting to buy a horse that has only ever been ON a horse and being led at that two times. You just got that little filly and a month or so ago another mini..... Im just afraid what will happen here when mom decides that riding isnt for her.

I know for a fact that mom is deff. riding him there. We never buy a horse w/out riding it unless we dont want it for riding. Or we atleast need to see someone ride him. Our 18' saddle would fit him because thats what they had on him, there daughter is pretty heavy set.

Moms going to go look at him Wensday and i know i plan on going and spending at least 20 minutes on his back (i dont want to be on to long though and look rude or anything) and see if he backs, stops properly and knows his gaits and leads. Mom wants to ride him a bit to while there.

She isnt having and issues on Military (tobys paint horse)with riding. He had him over and insisted mom ride saturday, then sunday she asked if she could ride him agian ...so im thinking she likes it pretty good. She looks pretty balanced to me, but then agian im not the one in the saddle.

So Do you guys think this one would be pretty good?

She needs a much bigger horse, we have said that before, have we not?? Lyn is quite right, this little pony cannot carry your Mom. You need a Draft cross, around 15.2hh minimum.

That's it, I'm done with this thread.

I'll talk to her then ....

I mean i know haflingers can carry around 250 pounds (a couple sites and people told me they can carry 300 pounds like its 100 pounds no prob. We are not planning trail rides with him ..just about a 1/2 hour session once or twice a week ..something she can learn on first. i'll probaly take care of him though bc mom works all the time exept weekends.

i think this horse would work for her + she likes him. I'm not afriad to tell her 'mom you need to keep looking' if i have to. But i have 1/2 you saying 'yeah he will work' and half saying 'no'. Bc if you guys out there know for sure that this horse wont work, im not going to take off school to go with her to look at it.

Leeann..... Count your responses again. Lisa was the only one that thought he MIGHT work. 3 of the 4 that gave you a suggestion said we think he is too small. Im not sure why you ask our suggestions but when we give them it is like you have it set in your mind and you arent going to listen anyway. I AM A FAT PERSON....... your mom is shorter and heavier than I am..... I WOULD NOT RIDE THIS HORSE. What happened to the "we will diet together over winter , take lessons and see" post from last week.

I am not dissing your mom dont get me wrong. I AM HER just 40 pounds lighter. I dont feel comfortable on my daughters 15 hand Quarter/arab mare...I rode and showed arabians for years so I am way past being led only your mom is still in the being led category... Buying your mom a horse to ride isnt going to help her right now. Getting in shape herself first is. I struggle with that every day..... I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!

I will reiterate what I've posted before in another thread. Why not go to a "reputable" instructor, let your mom ride and take a few lessons and let this instructor evaluate your mom. She can take group lessons and have the comeraderie of a social outing with others who have horses in common. Not only will it build her confidence, but it will help her decide if she actually wants all the responsibility that goes along with grooming, and taking care of a horse after riding. There is so much more for your Mom to learn, and looks to me like a "been there done that" instructor will benefit your mom. Plus she/he can evaluate and guide your mom as to what her abilities are to help her find the right horse for her. Good luck.

Really i can tell my mom 'i dont think this horse will work' ..but its up to her. I have no say in wether she buys it or not. I just thought i should ask you guys before and get some opinions and all. If you guys are that sure that this deff isnt the one ...then i will tell mom how this is, which im guessing i will have to do in the morning since it looks you guys dont agree with this one. But i cant stop mom from making her own decision.

Leeann, If your mom is truely dead set on a horse then please dont keep asking us what we think about it? I know that we dont have to answer when you post, and honestly, Im getting to that point that I dont want to answer them. I feel like you are young and dont have alot to do or much confidence in what you do. From the posts before about the problems with your mini etc, I dont think you are very experienced with horses in spite of what you say about being around them alot. I know there are many that will find this post rude and insulting. Im not trying to do that to you I just dont get why you dont take the advice of experienced people who really are trying to think of you, your mom and the horses best interest.

I think Im just gonna have to stop trying to talk to you. Sorry.

Lyn

edited point taken Ashley this is still on topic what I edited wasnt.

Honestly, why does it matter how many horses they have as long as they can care for them?

I have seen several others on here get a number of them in a short time, includeing yourself Lyn.

As for size, dont know as I dont know big horses that well.

Too Small. This is only a large pony.

You seriously need a draft cross, as every one has said, at the minimum 15.2hh DRAFT cross.

Keep looking.
