My daughter's riding pony comes into heat so strongly it is ridiculous. We didn't notice it much when we bought her last August, but this spring she is quite the hussy. I stalled my older gelding next to her last night and she was awful. Squirting (sorry on the visual there guys) and rubbing her butt on the stall wall. Today when I turned him out to pasture she went nuts, racing along the fence line and calling for him. She almost ran me over. We can't take her to shows if she is going to lose her mind like this around the geldings. Is it just because it is the first heat of the season, or is there something I can give her? I've been reading about Evitex/chasteberry. Has anyone tried this before? HELP!

Have you had a Veet out to check her out? Sometimes it is as simple as a cyst that can be removed.

Some mares just have strong heats...but before giving her anything..do have a Vet Check her out.

I have two here that have strong heats.. Maggie..the one I want to take to VSE's in the furutre..but because of that..we will see. Luckly her good temperament does not change. She just likes boys. She is also the reason I have not bought geldings.

And Ella my Jenny..she is a right hussy that one is.

My Icelandic and Fjord riding horses..luckly I have not had either of that breed show heat at all. Even when other breed geldings or stallions are around. Is funny the Icelandics...they will only show heat if they are in a pasture with an Icelandic stallion. Not that I am complaining....

Good luck with your mare.

I had the vet out last night and there is nothing physically wrong with her. So at least we ruled that out, but I'm still looking for advice or opinions on some of those products out there that are supposed to help. Has anyone tried any with success?

I have used Mare Magic ( I believe that is the name) it is actually raspberry leaves. Only takes a pinch for the minis. Settled down their up and down moods but be careful as it takes some of their zip away for showing! Keeps them on an even keel.

Regumate works, as does injectable progesterone. Neither are ideal, but they do work and are proven to do so
