By the way, just for the record, I agree with you Danielle, for what it's worth. No healthcare system is perfect. They all need improving. But it is all a very overwhelming task when you look at all that needs to be changed. I would like to see who ever gets votted in do SOMETHING to improve it in some way.
This is the first time I have posted on this board I usually just read the posts. However about the Canada trade talk from the debate Mr. Obama said we need to force Canada into trading, Mr. Macain said we should not force or niebors into anything we need to negotiate fairly.

Our government can't manage our money, can't manage our borders, can't manage our foreign affairs, and yet, we want our government who has done such an impecable job so far, to manage our personal health care. Oh man. Shoot me now.

Oh Mary Lou, I can appreciate that you wanted to hear him say that OR he said it once BUT he flip flops. It's not the same day but he has spoken about this before.

There were signs back then that Obama's view was more conflicted. On Feb. 8, Goolsbee met with the Canadian consul general in Chicago and offered assurances that Obama's rhetoric was "more reflective of political maneuvering than policy," according to a Canadian memo summarizing the meeting and obtained by Fortune. "In fact, he mentioned that going forward the Obama camp was going to be careful to send the appropriate message without coming off as too protectionist."

With the primary contest over, I asked Obama to clarify his remarks on NAFTA. "I think that sometimes during campaigns the rhetoric gets overheated and amplified," he concedes. Did his? "Politicians are always guilty of that, and I don't exempt myself." During a debate before the Texas and Ohio primaries, Obama said, "We should use the hammer of a potential opt-out" to force Canada and Mexico to renegotiate NAFTA. Now, however, he says he doesn't plan to unilaterally reopen NAFTA, that he had just spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper that morning (Harper had called to congratulate him on the nomination), and that "I'm looking forward to a conversation with him. I'm a big believer in opening up a dialogue and figuring out how we can make this work for all people."

Thanks Minimama. I don't know what the solution is for us here in Canada to fix what doesn't work in our system, or I should say I don't HOW they should go about it, I do know what needs to be fixed. As far as the U.S. I said in another thread thar our system wouldn't work in the U.S. because can you imagine what would happen further to your economy if all of a sudden you changed the system to mirror ours?

. There would be massive lay-offs in your insurance industry and that would be horrible. I know both your candidates have a plan and who knows if both plans or neither will work?

I just felt so horrible for Bonnie the other day on another thread when she mentioned because of her husband's illness and her mounting medical cost that aren't covered that she will more than likely lose her home

. I can't imagine going through something so difficult - the illness of a spouse and on top of that the worry of losing your home.

. As I said I have no clue what would work in the U.S. but it's good that both candidates at least recognize that the changes they are proposing will hopefully address some of the issues.

Well it is great he said this... "I'm a big believer in opening up a dialogue and figuring out how we can make this work for all people."

That may be great for Canada/U.S. business relations..
OMG! LOL You are making me laugh so hard! You just flipped flopped! I think I have to go piddle!

Well whoever wins and becomes your next President should truly, if they want to re-open and re-negotiate NAFTA, better not come in with a "hammer", lol, because they won't be very welcomed if they try and use mega force, doesn't matter if it's McCain or Obama. You will just end up with fireworks

UHOH..Fight..stand up and fight!! I was wondering just how many on here that don't agree with their countrys government/ policy makes their voices heard? We are constantly bugging out rep..and if Canada is not happy with the free trade..tell your whoever it is you tell..

Fight??

had enough of that,

. All parties just need to come to the "table" and work things out without a "FIGHT" and just diplomacy. It will be interesting to see when they do sit down to discuss it. I think there have been problems for Americans and Canadians and Mexicans with NAFTA. I am sure they can make it more equitable for all or at least try to. I sure as heck wouldn't want the job of trying to do that.

Its literally BEYOND me why anyone WOULD vote for him????

Being as I live in Canada I think I would know that the statement "long waits for critical care" is absolutely UNTRUE.
It apparently was true for the person who told me about her husband's health problems, but from what you & ML say it is not the norm where you are. Canada, like the US, is a big country.

By critical care, I really did not mean sitting in an emergency room. The person who related their story to me needed life saving surgery - and had to wait many months for it primarily for bureaucratic reasons, results of which were to shorten his life. That to me is critical care.

Anyway.......obviously there is no perfect system, ours is a very long way from it and I welcome a positive change from either candidate, I just don't agree with Obama's position.

My opinion always has been if you don't vote you have no right to complain.
Well you can't vote for him so DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT

Ummmm. That's a bit harsh. So Canadians aren't allowed to have an opinion? Seems strange since many of the U.S.'s policies directly affect Canadians (financial, healthcare, trade, etc.).

Nicole, I think you lost your way, this thread is about healthcare, not about either of the two candidates.

Wildoak, can I ask what province this person resides in? I know that in Quebec right now, just over from Ottawa (Ontario) and at the Gatineau Hospital they are having many problems as far as wait times. We have quite a few people from the province coming into Ontario because of these recent problems. I truly am surprised that her husband had to wait for critical surgery because usually those will bump other surgeries and take precedent, always.

My husband yesterday had a piece of steel go in deep, the underneath of his wrist, and had to go immediately to the hospital where they removed and had to have stitches. He was taken immediately, no wait, because they were worried that it had gone through his main artery in his wrist. My sister a few years ago had appendicitis and was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. They operated immedidately, absolutely no delay as it was life-threatening, her appendix had ruptured.
