Ok gang, this is probably not anything new but I've experimented yet again bound and determined to make these round bales work for me. This one is a no brainer, but I like to think of myself as creative so humor me. So far I like this idea the best.

I chose to plunk this rolled bale in the barnyard where its nice and dry because all my fields are nothing but mud. Its rolled up on a small but sturdy pallet which I like because I don't want it sitting on the ground. The smaller pallet is working better than a larger one so the edge of the hay is pretty much hanging over it a little bit.

I stood the hay up on end the wrong way on purpose so that way I could encase it with a round of field fencing which I simply cut to measure. The field fencing is holding it together perfectly and I have it secured around the hay with three clips; top, bottom, and middle. When I need to tighten it up, its simple to un-clip and pull the fence tighter.

I also like the way it slows up their eating by making them grab through the fence holes. It also is keeping waste to a minimum and nobody is digging in it and laying in it.

To your left is Bright Star and Glory. On the right is Dirty Holly the pig and Noelle

In this picture you will notice the bunches of holes the horses made by pulling the hay through it.

Look at the top how high it is. All I have to do is push it down the sides of the field fence from the top as it unravels and then it fills the holes back up so it stays reachable. Eventually I will work my way into the middle of the very top and give that a shove down as they eat the sides down.

Does anyone remember my "Baby Chrissy" the one that I said would always be my baby? Well, that's her on the left and Brite Star on the right.

And at the end of the day when everyone is inside for the night, or during rain or snow, its simple to throw a tarp over it and secure with bungies. So far I have had this set up in the barnyard now for 3 weeks and I cannot complain. No one has gotten stuck in any way.

Just wanted to share. Have a great day everyone

You are SO SMART! I love the idea, and must go buy clips to try it!

looks good but Ill share my bit of experience over the past year involving the round bale.

We have ours in a built shed like thing on pallets, and we had the bottom on all sides wood, and the top 1/2 was the same type fencing you have. We figured the fence would catch the hay as it came off the bale, and the horses could eat through the fence. Worked great! It took awhile but someone did get their head stuck.

They pushed to get at what must have been a wonderful mouthfull of hay, and the fencing gave way abit and the head went through a square! The wires on either side just slid, ever so much. I had to get out there with wire cutters. No injury of any kind, just stuck, but it was a happy stuck (for the time being) as they were face deep in hay.

Your set up is different, because you tighten your fence up, ours was in a fixed position. So maybe no one will ever get their head through a square.

That looks like it works wonderfully! I've been contemplating using round bales lately, as we are very over grazed due to drought the last two years. We are having to throw so much hay

. Round bales sound like a more economical approch, but I worry about botulism and mold... I know plenty of people use them w/o any problem though, and it is a very tempting idea...

. I will deffinitely keep this idea in mind for the future!

Very clever Marty!

Can you show a picture or explain what your clips are like? I'm trying to envision how just three of anything keeps the fencing in place.

Hey Stella I know what you mean about the squares sliding over so I never say never. I just keep an eye on things.

Parm, I just used three two way clips that I had laying around; any clips will do to hold the fence together at the ends. I used hay string actually till I found some extra clips in the tack room. So far I only tightened it up one square and I don't think it will need much more because I keep shoving the hay down the sides from the top keeping the bottom portion full. I'm three weeks into this round bale and so far so good, minimal waste, but as we all know, never say never so I do watch them.

Oh please come spring!

Holly, My Dear!!!!

You look MAAAvalous!

Love, Filthy Lyric....

( they've locked me up in my stall, and when she finally lets me out, there is no mud to roll in, only this white slippery stuff...)

I'm lucky enough to still get my little square bales, but if I was using round bales it sure looks like a great idea! I am impressed!

Dru you crazy woman you totally crack me up sooooooo bad! Tell Lyric Dirty Holly is a complete and total pig and I am so glad to hear Lyric is the same way so I don't feel so bad. I am totally exhaused grooming that horse every day. She has no respect! My hands actually CRAMP when I brush her. ugh! She has no class what can I say; but she sure makes pretty babies so that has got to be worth something.

Great idea Marty it should be put on the the idea page of BEST OF MINIATURES for all to refer to.

My apologies to the OP since this is completely off topic but I just have to say, Mona, I LOVE your dogs. They are so handsome (as is the horse of course ;))

I was at a horse seminar last week and someone asked about feeing round bales to horses. The Vet said he wouldn't recommend doing it, because if it's not properly dried and baled, it can kill the horses

if it's not properly dried and baled, it can kill the horses
And yet around here it is more normal to feed horses round bales than squares and I have not ever heard of anyone having a horse get sick because of it. I know I am always concerned that my hay is green, fresh smelling and free of foreign matter but the shape of the bales is not a concern (I feed 1500lb squares and always buy a few small squares to use for traveling to shows etc but I have used rounds too)

nysart8902: Your vet is right. Most round bales in my area are rolled with hay fit for cows, not horses. Some may be baled wet with junky weedy grass and left out in the weather. Not mine.

My round bales were rolled with the some of the best orchard grass hay for horses that is available on this planet. I drove over 100 miles to pick them up knowing what kind of hay it was and I can assure you they were rolled dry and put up properly in the barns. You just have to know what you are buying and make sure it is hay palatable for a little mini to chew and be very careful about it. I'm keeping a dilligent eye out on them and if it doesn't work out i'll be the first to let you know because I don't make the same mistake twice. (or try not to)
