Ok gang, this is probably not anything new but I've experimented yet again bound and determined to make these round bales work for me. This one is a no brainer, but I like to think of myself as creative so humor me. So far I like this idea the best.
I chose to plunk this rolled bale in the barnyard where its nice and dry because all my fields are nothing but mud. Its rolled up on a small but sturdy pallet which I like because I don't want it sitting on the ground. The smaller pallet is working better than a larger one so the edge of the hay is pretty much hanging over it a little bit.
I stood the hay up on end the wrong way on purpose so that way I could encase it with a round of field fencing which I simply cut to measure. The field fencing is holding it together perfectly and I have it secured around the hay with three clips; top, bottom, and middle. When I need to tighten it up, its simple to un-clip and pull the fence tighter.
I also like the way it slows up their eating by making them grab through the fence holes. It also is keeping waste to a minimum and nobody is digging in it and laying in it.
To your left is Bright Star and Glory. On the right is Dirty Holly the pig and Noelle
In this picture you will notice the bunches of holes the horses made by pulling the hay through it.
Look at the top how high it is. All I have to do is push it down the sides of the field fence from the top as it unravels and then it fills the holes back up so it stays reachable. Eventually I will work my way into the middle of the very top and give that a shove down as they eat the sides down.
Does anyone remember my "Baby Chrissy" the one that I said would always be my baby? Well, that's her on the left and Brite Star on the right.
And at the end of the day when everyone is inside for the night, or during rain or snow, its simple to throw a tarp over it and secure with bungies. So far I have had this set up in the barnyard now for 3 weeks and I cannot complain. No one has gotten stuck in any way.
Just wanted to share. Have a great day everyone
