Lyn, I'm so sorry, I hope she'll over come this, with a healthy foal and full strength... But this reminds my of Kaykay's post (some thing like) horses need hay to be happy, and a lack of hay can cause stomach ulcers.. I really hope she recovers. My prayers are with you.

I surely hope she gets better! And I also hope we're not taking turns for having sick horse!

Prayers and good wishes

Fran

Keep us in your prayers.... with GQs meds and Fancys meds.... I feel like Im running a hospital not a farm~

Lyn

I can sympathize with that comment! We had more vet bills last year than I've had in all of my 25+ years with horses.

I'm glad to hear Fancy is OK, and am hoping her baby makes a healthy appearance at the appropriate time!

Just in case there are others thinking like midnight.... Fancy WAS on hay when she got sick... the third trimester of pregnancy they get some alfalfa hay to help with milk production... She isnt ill because I dont feed hay. Just wanted to clear that up. One colic from a twist in 20 years two years ago...I have been feeding complete feed for 10 years now without problems. In fact the vet said last night to take her off the hay and put her back on the complete feed for now.

I learned from Margie that the best way to give SMZ's are to crush them in some Peptobismal - it doesn't block the effectiveness - some vets won't give SMZ's because of the risk of ulcers it carries with it - the pepto seems to eliminate that risk. Some horses like the taste - I had to give it to Pandora - our Clyde - one time - of course the amount was a bit different - she opened her mouth after I shot it in the side of her mouth and let it all collect in her bottom lip - then she looked at me and with great distain and blew out as horses will do -gave me a big pink shower! Pandora is happy at her new home now - they tube their Clydes for most meds - now I get it! Thinking of you Lyn - praying for great results and happy little full term foal!

Thanks Vicki.... Im putting all these meds in the yogurt....she is supposed to have 30 cc of yogurt twice a day to so I figured why agrivate her twice! Anyway am on my way out to graze her on the grass a bit. She still isnt wanting to eat much.... at least shes not dipping every mouthful in her water bucket first.... I never knew before that was a clue for ulcers... somehow they think they can make the food softer buy wetting it... her bucket has been filthy ever afternoon since she is stalled. I think her change of sleeping arrangements upset her more than anything else.... Still praying for the best.

LYN, HOPE SHE'S BETTER TODAY! ONE OF THE THINGS WE DO WHEN WE SUSPECT ULCERS, SINCE THE GASTROGUARD TAKES 3-5 DAYS TO BEGIN HEALING AND THEY ARE OUCHIE! IS TO SQUIRT SOME BARIUM..YEP GOOD OLD CHALKY BARIUM ! IT COATS THE TUMMY AND ULCERS, BLOCKING THE PAIN WHEN THEY DO EAT AND FOR THE TIME IT TAKES THE ULCER MED TO BEGIN HEALING IT, WE PREVENT THEM FROM GOING OFF THEIR FEED...OUR ONE VETS PRIMARY INTEREST IN VET SCHOOL WAS EQUINE ULCERS AND I'M SURE THIS PRODUCT HAS SAVED SEVERAL OF OURS IN THE LAST 2 YEARS! ANY SMALL ANIMAL VET THAT DOES CONTRAST X RAYS SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET IT IF THEY DON'T STOCK IT, CHEAP INSURANCE!! ~HUGS~ TO YOU AND TO FANCY!
