I just heard today that my cousins one and a half year old son is in the hospital in an induced coma after surgery a few days ago! It seems he had a hernia and it twisted some of his bowel. I don't have all the details yet, only what my mom said in the e-mail. I called home and my step dad said he will be ok as long as nothing new develops after this. They think they have the problem fixed, he just needs to be kept asleep so he won't move and the surgery will heal.

Could really use some good thoughts and prayers for this handsome little fella, I met him this summer around his first birthday and he was the first baby I ever held that didn't cry like I was pinching them! He is such a charming little boy with the warmest smile! I just want him to grow up living a normal life and hope that everything will go well for him now. I wish we were closer, I miss the out of province babes.

I talked to my Mom this morning, she said they have removed 4 INCHES of bowel from this little boy.

We are not sure yet how this will affect him when he wakes up, and wether or not it will have long term consequences on his life or his health. I'm just hoping he can go on to be a normal, happy, healthy boy. I bought him a Blues Clues get well card (its sooo hard to find a get well card for a baby

) and by the time it gets to him, they should be letting him wake up. He is asleep, but they can still tell he is frustrated that he can't get his thumb in his mouth, he has IVs in both hands. Poor baby, I wish there was more we could do.

Oh, and wen they took him to the hospital the nurse told them he just had the flu and to take him home to bed, would not get a Dr to look at him. A few hours later my aunt went back in, and an intern saw him and put him on IV right away, saying he was almost lifeless at that point. When the Dr finally saw him in the AM he told the staff to "get him in the OR NOW!" We are very very lucky that my aunt and cousin didn't follow the nurses directions and just put him to bed for the night, as he would not have made it another few hours without treatment, let alone all night.

Praying here too. He is the same age as Robby. Robby has a hydrocele which is an inguinal hernia that lets fluind into his scrotal sack. It is related to his hygroma that he was born with. So far it just makes one side larger than the other but his bowel can also come thru that hole and strangulate which is probably what happened to your little nephew. 4" of bowel isnt a huge amount. He will be ok. These hernias are more comon than people think. Its the induced sleep that scares people the most. praying for a quick recovery. He will be up faster than you think. Get him something colorful.....Robby loves the balloons in the grocery store. He also loves books. When your little guy wakes up just make his life as bright as you can....he will love his auntie for it.

Thanks sooo much Lyn, its very reassuring to know that the 4" isn't a lot. I know you were a nurse, so you're a little closer to these things than we are. Its hard, because we are a while ocean away and can't get all the info as soon as we want it. The induced sleep didn't scare me too much, I can understand how it is needed with the little ones who move so much. I'm so glad to know that babies bounce back real quick. I think I'd be more worried if one of my older cousins was in the same situation, the older we get the harder it seems it is to heal.

The thing that they were probably most worried about was the necrotic meaning dead bowel getting his whole little self infected..... If you stretched his bowels out straight there are about 7 feet of it in there. He will not suffer from the loss of it. There is still plenty left to absorb nutrients with. Think of it as baby person colic surgery.

Had another update today from my Mom. The little guy is still being kept pretty much asleep, although it sounds like they might be letting him "wake up" just enough to see his mommy for a few minuites, but not fully awake enough to move or even want to. They had to take the IVs out of his hands because they blocked. They moved them to his feet, and it took them 7 tries to get one of them in.

My aunt said she had to leave the room after the 5th attempt. He has 15 staples in his little belly. They had to take him off of morphine for the pain because he was showing signs of addiction (twitching and spasms). He is now on codine for the pain. Its going to be a long slow road for the little guy, his mommy and daddy and grandparents are going to have to be strong to get through this with him... he is going to be CRANKY when they wake him up!

Poor little guy... I bet his nanny is going to spoil him extra hard this Christmas

I hope his older (2 years) brother is doing ok, he must be feeling awful put out by now. I'll have to find something to tuck in the envelope to send down for him, some bob the builder stickers maybe.
