leanna im on my way out the door but check for strangles. i had a horse look just like this and it was strangles!! hard to find the swelling in winter coat sending prayers.

Abcessed teeth can certantly go from undetected to all out swelling and sickness in a few hours. We saw this a few years back with our dog. She was fine in the AM and by supper at 5pm was swollen and listless. By 6:30pm she was nearly comotose and was rushed to the emergency vet who told us if we had waited till the AM we would have lost her. The infection in an abcess can be quite serious and make an animal very very sick in a short amount of time. I especially thought tooth abcess since you said he is a slow eater, indicating there may be some hidden long term pain/problems with his mouth.

the vet is probably there by now....well wishes and prayers to you and Narko {{{HUGS}}}

Good thoughts for Narko!

We had a mare with swollen face, didn't eat and rink, first thought snake bite was not. Went to vet, ex-rayed teeth and gum was fine. Treated her with meds two days later was fine.

I hadn't thought of a tooth but really should have, because I actually just went through an abcess issue with one of my molars.. take about painful and tons of swelling in a very short amount of time... and I TOTALLY think that she is also on track with the slow eating...

I sure hope that your vet gets there soon... and so wish I could do something to help...

Take care..

Vet left about 15 minutes ago. He checked him out fully and i think i overloaded the poor man with information. I told him that he has not been out of his stall since last night around 7pm'ish. Only place he goes is in his stall and our drylot. All the brushes, sprays ext are in plastic containers in the grooming stall. We have at this point narrowed it down to an allergic reaction, his his stall shavings of all things. We did a complete walk through of his stall and found nothing. Then he asked if us about our shavings ... :new_shocked:. THAT WAS IT. Tuesday the roads were to bad to drive to TSC to get bedding so we just ran over to our Buckeye Dealer and picked up a few bags of their bedding. I've used there bedding before, but not for about 6 months. The bedding has been in their since tuesday. Its the only thing we could narrow it down to.

He gave him 3 shots, i asked him what they were but i cannot remember off the top of my head now. One was a pink fluid and the other two were clear. He also had a slight temp and i told him the swelling had gotten worse since i got home around 3:30'ish, he said it would. Our vet said that the shavings should be fine in their overnight but to get them out first thing tommarow.

I was just shocked, i never would have imagined that shavings would do this.

I carried warm water out of the house for him to drink being that he has not drank any since the water level has not gone down since this am. I gave him some of the fine hay and he is showing a little interest in it. Poor guy, his face especially around his nose and nostrils are so sensitive. He didnt leave any medicine here with us so i'm hoping the shots do the trick. I'm half tempted to sleep out there still, i'll prob be out there every hour eitherway. I'm still in shock that its the wood shavings.

Thank you for all the prayors, dont know what we would do without you guys

Glad the vet thinks its something simple and he is being treated. I would disagree with the vet on one thing though... get that beddingout ASAP! Don't wait for morning, strip and sweep that stall now. I'd rather see a horse on a bare floor than on something that caused an allergic reaction. I'm surprised the vet wouldn't reccomend taking it out right away.

Glad to hear he should be on the mend though, keep an eye on him just in case though!

Glad to hear it's not something really serious at least! I agree with the above person though, I would get the shavings out now.

This happened to us at Nationals my horse had a severe allergic reaction to something and we suspected the bedding so we totally stripped the stall and bedded him on hay until I could get screened bagged shavings. It may also have been a spider bite but we don't know what happened and probably never will but from now on I will only bed him on shavings I bring to a show and I plan on watching out for spiders. The vet gave him a shot of dexamethasone and it worked great he was back to normal in the morning. Believe me he was a lot more swollen than Narko [his eyes were shut and nostrils almost closed] you wouldn't think a horses head could swell that much until you see it happen. Glad Narko is OK. EDITED:

We have concrete floors under the bedding, i believe we have a bale of straw in my dads barn.

I hope your vet knows what he's doing.

Leanna, if you really think it's the shavings, remove them and use hay for now.

You don't have any alfalfa hay do you ??? Blister Beetle can cause this too.

Keep us posted.

Get the shavings out now! concrete floor is better for him than longer contact with an allergen. Realize that as swollen as he is on the outside , thats how swollen his mucous membranes are inside. He isnt eating or drinking because his throat is swelling too..... It it really is the shavings, get them out. you will find out by morning if he gets better without the shavings there. If not then look for something else...strangles is one that came to mind as did abcessed tooth or sinus infection. The fever to me doesnt say allergy it says infection somewhere.

This happened to me once with a new young horse. I agree with Lyn, strip that stall asap, vac it out if you can then bed it with lots of hay or straw. I really wouldn't leave him in it over nite cuz if he lays down he'll be even closer to breathing it. IF it is indeed the shavings. It has been brutal cold lately up here in our north so it could be anything from a spider to an allergic reaction. Just keep a close watch (which I know you'll do) and don't hesitate to call your vet back in the dead of nite if he gets worse. Prayers coming.

lf the shavings have been in his stall since Tuesday would he not have any allergic signs by Wednesday.. never had it happen but was just thinking shouldn't an allergy show up long before 3 days have passed? Anyway maybe thats why he didn't think there was a rush to get the shavings out. Though l sure in heck would get rid of them in a hurry. Hope he improves by tomorrow poor guy.

I agree with the others........I would remove the shaving ASAP. It's not going to hurt him to be on concrete for the night........or you can put some straw in.

I'm also surprised that the vet said that you could wait til morning with the bedding change.

Gosh how scarey for you - glad your vet was out already. If it truly is the shavings, I agree with the others, sweep it out asap and replace his bedding with hay. We never had a horse allergic to something but we did have a dog react to eating a peanut this way and our vet told us to give her Benadryl. I hope you are seeing improvement now that he was given something. Please keep us updated - hope he will be back to normal by morning
